Resilient masterplan in Los Angeles will create human-scaled mixed-use neighborhood

Continuum Partners and Los Angeles Cold Storage have submitted a development application with the City of Los Angeles to reimagine a Downtown gateway site. The project, dubbed Fourth & Central, calls for 1,521 residential units, 401,000 square feet of creative office space, 93,000 square feet of retail/restaurant use, and a 68-room hotel. The project’s master plan and project architecture are by Los Angeles-based Studio One Eleven. Two marquee buildings are designed by David Adjaye.

Stantec unveils concept designs for Battery Coastal Resilience Project in Lower Manhattan

Stantec has released concept design renderings for the $129 million Battery Coastal Resilience Project in Lower Manhattan. The Battery currently sits at an elevation that will be submerged as sea levels rise. As part of the project, the wharf at the southern tip of Manhattan will be reconstructed, raising the waterfront esplanade approximately 5 feet above its current elevation—11 feet above Mean Sea Level—to protect the park and nearby community.

Affirmed Housing hosts virtual grand opening celebration for ‘Aria,’ bringing Prop HHH supportive housing to Los Angeles

Last week, Affirmed Housing and its development partners hosted a virtual Grand Opening celebration for Aria, a permanent supportive housing community designed to reduce homelessness in Los Angeles. Mayor Eric Garcetti of the City of Los Angeles, states, “Aria is a home for 56 of our most vulnerable neighbors. Affordable housing development is currently under construction in Santa Clara, California

Construction is underway on a new 100% affordable-housing community developed by St. Anton Communities in Santa Clara, California. The transit-oriented development is situated on 1.22 acres and located within the City’s Tasman East Specific Plan area. The sustainable, six-story residential community, designed by KTGY Architecture + Planning, prioritizes public transit and provides an efficient and connected living environment for the area’s lower-income workforce.

Construction commences on award-winning tower The Wedge

The Wedge, a sustainable new residential tower by Cox Developments in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada has commenced construction. The highly sustainable development was designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, with numerous eco-friendly elements like water conservation, active on-site power generation, sustainable materials, natural ventilation, daylighting, and strategic sun control to name a few.  The Wedge will also offer ground-floor commercial space.  The development was designed by San Diego and Vancouver-based AVRP Skyport and is being built by Blackrete Builders Inc.  Construction commenced August 1 2020, and is anticipated to be complete early 2023.

DUMBO’S Front & York rises to the Brooklyn skyline

Front & York, mixed-use development in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood, recently celebrated its official topping out, with each of its two residential towers reaching 21 stories. Designed by architect Morris Adjmi, the development has views of the neighborhood’s Historic District, the East River and the entire Manhattan skyline from the Statue of Liberty up to the skyscrapers of Midtown. Front & York’s development is centered on one of the city’s largest private parks, a 25,000-square-foot space designed by Michael Van Valkenburg Associates.

Venice modular project addresses homeless crisis while providing employment

Los Angeles City Planning Commission has unanimously approved Studio One Eleven’s design for supportive housing in Venice. Developed by Venice Community Housing Corporation, the four-story, 40-unit apartment building at 2467-2471 Lincoln Boulevard will serve transition-aged youth and people experiencing chronic homelessness. The new structure builds upon and expands the existing home of Safe Place for Youth currently on the site and will include on-site opportunities for work experience, within their offices and at their planned micro-enterprise space.

Architecture Design Collaborative breaks ground on affordable apartment community in Fontana, Calif.

Architecture Design Collaborative’s partners with Jamboree Housing Corporation and the Fontana Housing Authority in the construction of Sierra Avenue Apartments. “We wanted to give the development a modern agrarian look and feel to go with one of the main service concepts we originally planned for which was farm fresh to table,” said Chris Weimholt, Principal with ADC. “We planned for a robust community garden where residents could work with the JHC’s service partners to educate them on healthy eating and growing their own fruits and vegetables”.

Toyota to build Woven City, a prototype city of the future

Earlier this week Toyota announced plans to build a prototype “city” of the future on a 175-acre site at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan. For the design of Woven City, Toyota has commissioned Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels, founder and creative director, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Envisioned as a “living laboratory,” the Woven City will serve as a home to full- time residents and researchers who will be able to test and develop technologies such as autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes and artificial intelligence in a real-world environment.
