The Lacombe Lift Station was recently built in Red Deer in Alberta, Canada, to accommodate the area’s population increase as well as to upgrade the existing sewage/wastewater systems that served the local population.  The engineers on the project, Stantec, wanted a proven, leak-proof waterproofing system to protect the station and selected W. R. MEADOWS’ building envelope membranes.

The lift station is located in Red Deer, a city in central Alberta located near the midpoint of the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor, surrounded by Red Deer County. It is Alberta’s third most populous city, after Calgary and Edmonton. Red Deer is in Aspen Parkland, a region of rolling hills that is home to oil, grain, and cattle production. It is a center for oil and agriculture distribution, and the surrounding region is a major center for petrochemical production.

Red Deer had a population of 100,418 as of the Canada 2016 census, making it Alberta’s third city to surpass a population count of 100,000 people.  Due to the increasing population, the Lacombe Lift Station was constructed to help with Red Deer’s existing infrastructure.

The engineers, Stantec, desired durability both during and after construction.  They required a proven leak-proof waterproofing system and selected W. R. MEADOWS PRECON, MEL-ROL, and HYDRALASTIC 836 for the construction.

PRECON is a composite sheet membrane comprised of a non-woven fabric, elastomeric membrane, and W. R. MEADOWS’ exclusive, patented plasmatic core.  The plasmatic core is a seven-layer matrix designed for toughness and provides the lowest water vapor transmission (WVT) rating on the market.  Once concrete is poured against PRECON and the concrete cures, a mechanical bond forms that secures the concrete to the membrane.  PRECON was used to waterproof horizontally underslab (underneath the structure).

MEL-ROL waterproofing system is a flexible, versatile, dependable, roll-type waterproofing membrane. It is composed of a nominally 56 mil thick layer of polymeric waterproofing membrane on a heavy duty, four-mil thick, cross-laminated polyethylene carrier film. The two components are laminated together under strict quality-controlled production procedures.  MEL-ROL was used vertically on the walls (sides of the structure).

HYDRALASTIC 836 is a cold-applied, solvent-free, single-component waterproofing compound. It does not shrink, has a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, and has a very low odour. It will not crack in extreme cold or slump due to softening at high temperatures.

Both PRECON and MEL-ROL products were chosen due to their compatibility with each other.  In addition, by choosing one manufacturer, just one rep from the company was present during mockups and construction, supervising to ensure the system was being installed and used correctly, rather than multiple reps from different companies.
