Historic UCLA building recognized as ‘model modernization’

CO Architects was recognized with a design award for its recently completed modernization of Pritzker Hall on the UCLA campus.  The Westside Urban Forum honored the architecture firm with a 2021 WUF Design Award in the Public/Institutional category for its sensitive design and programmatic updates to Pritzker Hall, improving the building’s seismic stability and energy efficiency.

Dodge Momentum Index loses steam in June

Following six months of consecutive gains, the Dodge Momentum Index fell to 165.8 (2000=100) in June, down 5% from the revised May reading of 175.1. The decline in June was the result of losses in both institutional planning, which fell 7%, and commercial planning, which lost 4%.

FGIA releases new technical manual for IG Units

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released new technical manual providing generic design considerations for cavity compensation for insulating glass (IG) units and determining conditions which impact the pressure in the IG unit cavity. IGMA TM 3200-21, “Design Considerations for IG Unit Cavity Pressure Compensation,” is FGIA’s newest technical manual.

OSHA Voluntary Protection Program serves as valuable safety resource for plants

Participants at the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) 2021 Virtual Summer Conference learned more about a voluntary safety program focused on excellence from one of its administrators as well as an FGIA member company participant. Brad Baptiste, regional Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) manager for OSHA Region VIII, and Rob Grommesh, insulating glass (IG) technical service manager for Cardinal Glass Industries, shared how manufacturers can succeed in safety through the OSHA VPP, which seeks to help manufacturing sites reach zero incidents and injuries.

Palm Springs ‘Agrihood’ wins top masterplan awards

Miralon, the sustainably designed “agrihood” community in Palm Springs, has received a sweeping set of 2021 Gold Awards, the top honor bestowed by PCBC – representing the best of the building industry. Sharing in the honors are: Robert Hidey Architects (RHA) which also helped conceive Miralon’s progressive land plan as well as the community’s overall design guidelines; ANDERSON | architecture + interiors & MRY, designer of Miralon Club interiors: and C2 Collaborative, creator of multiple outdoor spaces and linking with Miralon’s network of trails and the entire Miralon land plan, highlighted by the transformation of the former golf course.

Lisa Heschong shares data on benefits of daylighting at FGIA 2021 Virtual Summer Conference

Lisa Heschong, author and scientific researcher, took to the virtual stage during the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) 2021 Virtual Summer Conference to share her findings on the benefits of daylighting and window views. A licensed architect, Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and a founding principal of the Heschong Mahone Group (HMG), Heschong spoke about the many benefits of daylighting and how the fenestration and glazing industry is poised to take advantage of these attributes, all of which is covered in her book, “Visual Delight in Architecture: Daylight, Vision and View”.

ASCE statement on the partial building collapse in Surfside, Florida

The following is a statement by Tom Smith, Executive Director, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) “We are saddened by the tragic news coming out of Surfside, Florida, regarding the fatal partial building collapse of a condominium early Thursday morning. Safety is the top priority of every civil engineer, and protecting public health and safety is core to our mission at ASCE. We share our deepest condolences to all of those affected by this tragedy.”
