“It’s always interesting to consider what the winning projects say about the state of wood design,” said Jennifer Cover, WoodWorks’ President and CEO. “Part of that is understanding what drove the design teams to choose wood. Warmth, sustainability and cost are mentioned fairly consistently and 2018 was no exception. But comments this year also emphasized structural performance, the desire to create healthy, resilient and engaging structures, energy efficiency, meeting challenges of scale, and flexible spaces that can be adapted as needs change. It’s exciting to see examples of innovative systems and technologies, but this year’s projects are a reminder of the many reasons building designers gravitate to wood.”

WoodWorks Leads Successful Blast Testing of Loaded Mass Timber Structures

WoodWorks, in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Lab and Softwood Lumber Board, conducted a second series of blast tests on three existing two-story, single-bay cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures at Tyndall Air Force Base—the same structures involved in a series of initial blast tests performed in 2016.

WoodWorks leads blast testing project for cross-laminated timber

ideos are now available showing a series of live blast tests on three cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures at Tyndall Air Force Base, conducted by WoodWorks in cooperation with the US Forest Service and Softwood Lumber Board. Post-test observations were exciting. All structures remained intact and matched modeling predictions with acceptable levels of damage under significant explosive loading.

WoodWorks launched an updated version of its free carbon calculator, providing more options for buildings made from cross-laminated timber (CLT) and other mass timber products. Using wood products that store carbon instead of building materials that require fossil fuel energy to manufacture can help reduce greenhouse gases.
