Vitro Architectural Glass and PNC Financial Services Group have played integral roles in the development of sustainable architecture. PNC has more newly constructed LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified green buildings than any company in the world, while Vitro Glass products have figured prominently in many of PNC’s signature architectural projects, including its boldest yet: The Tower at PNC Plaza.

Opened in 2015 and planned to be one of the greenest office buildings ever built, the 33-story high-rise appears on the surface to be a conventional glass-and-steel skyscraper, yet the sleekly polished exterior hides a second glass façade that architectural firm Gensler designed, along with a rooftop solar chimney, to create a “breathing” building that uses fresh air and solar energy to naturally cool, heat and self-ventilate for much of the year.

The University announced today that it has finalized Radnor and Harrison Street’s acquisition of the building, which includes an agreement to modernize and renovate the property.

Pittsburgh Exceeds All North American Cities in Properties Committed to 50 Percent Reductions in Energy, Water, Emissions by 2030

Pittsburgh leads all 19 established 2030 Districts in the world with 81.7 million square feet committed. The Pittsburgh 2030 District, a strategic initiative of the Green Building Alliance, represents 506 buildings that are actively working to achieve 50 percent reductions in energy use, water consumption, and transportation emissions by the year 2030 (below baselines). The buildings represent a variety of sectors, including office towers, hospitals, multifamily residential buildings, universities, professional sports facilities, and museums.

Frick Environmental Center Achieves Prestigious Living Building Challenge Certification

On Friday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh invites the public to attend the announcement of Living Building Challenge Certification for the Frick Environmental Center. After more than a year of extensive sustainability work the shared project between the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and the City of Pittsburgh, received the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Certification, the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard by the International Living Future Institute. The Frick Environmental Center is the first Living Building in the U.S. that is municipally owned and free and open to the public.
