ME Dubai hotel at the Opus

Spanning 84,300 square meters (907,400 square feet), the Zaha Hadid-designed Opus was conceived as two separate towers that coalesce into a singular whole—taking the form of a cube. The cube’s double-glazed insulating façades incorporate a UV coating and a mirrored frit pattern to reduce solar gain. Applied around the entire building, this dotted frit patterning emphasizes the clarity of the building’s orthogonal form, while at the same time, dissolving its volume through the continuous play of light varying between ever-changing reflections and transparency.

New York Sanitation Building Wows with Perforated Solar Fins Enriched with Lumiflon FEVE Resin

Dattner Architects and WXY Architecture + Urban Design teamed up to design New York City’s Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage and Spring Street Salt Shed. The 2,600 custom perforated aluminum solar fins, “float” off the building masonry base and reduce the building’s solar heat. The louvers were protected with IFS Coatings’ IFS 500 FP, a Lumiflon-enriched product.

The Tower at PNC Plaza Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Vitro Architectural Glass and PNC Financial Services Group have played integral roles in the development of sustainable architecture. PNC has more newly constructed LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified green buildings than any company in the world, while Vitro Glass products have figured prominently in many of PNC’s signature architectural projects, including its boldest yet: The Tower at PNC Plaza. Opened in 2015 and planned to be one of the greenest office buildings ever built, the 33-story high-rise appears on the surface to be a conventional glass-and-steel skyscraper, yet the sleekly polished exterior hides a second glass façade that architectural firm Gensler designed, along with a rooftop solar chimney, to create a “breathing” building that uses fresh air and solar energy to naturally cool, heat and self-ventilate for much of the year.

Tower at PNC Plaza, featuring PPG glass and coatings, earns 2016 ARCHITECT R+D AWARD

The double-skin façade, one of the first of its kind in North America, combines with two vertical thermal shafts and a solar chimney to naturally ventilate the 33-story skyscraper without electricity or fan power for 42 percent of the year. As a result, the Tower at PNC Plaza, which opened Oct. 1, 2015, is expected to consume up to 50 percent less temperature-control-related energy than comparable buildings of its size.
