Engineers, contractors, educators, manufacturers, and material representatives will convene virtually from October 17-21, 2021, at the ACI Concrete Convention, the world’s gathering place for advancing concrete.  Originally scheduled as a hybrid event in Atlanta, GA, and online, the event will now be fully virtual.

Sept. 7 webinar to provide insulating glass units guidance

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) will host a webinar entitled “Quality, Compatibility and Performance Requirements for Insulating Glass Units” on Tues., Sept. 7 at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. This webinar will provide guidance to IG fabricators and window manufacturers using existing technology for edge seal design along with selection of sealants, desiccants, spacers, gases, glass and other components used for the manufacture of insulating glass.

Total construction starts move lower in July

Total construction starts fell 3% in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $854.8 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. There were few bright spots during the month, with all three sectors (residential, nonresidential building and nonbuildings) moving lower in July.

International Code Council launches “Code on a Mission” challenge urging adoption of modern energy efficiency codes

The International Code Council launched its “Code on a Mission” challenge yesterday which aims to have over a third of the U.S. population covered by the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) by the end of 2023. Already industry leaders like Architecture 2030, the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT), Energy Efficient Codes Coalition (EECC), Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and Responsible Energy Codes Alliance (RECA) have shown their support for the initiative.

Total construction starts slip in June

Total construction starts lost 7% in June, slipping to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $863.6 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. All three major sectors (residential, nonresidential building, and nonbuilding) pulled back during the month. Single family housing starts are feeling the detrimental effects of rising materials prices. Large projects that broke ground in May were absent in June for nonresidential building and nonbuilding starts, resulting in declines.

FGIA restructures staff; Kathy Krafka Harkema promoted, technical trainer position added

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) announces the restructuring of several staff positions at the association to accommodate a growing organization focused on multiple facets of the industry. This restructure includes the promotion of Kathy Krafka Harkema from U.S. codes and regulatory affairs manager to the newly created position of U.S. technical operations director as of Aug. 1.

American Concrete Institute announces Director of Innovative Concrete Technology

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) is pleased to announce that Rex C. Donahey, Ph.D., will serve as the Institute’s inaugural Director of Innovative Concrete Technology.  In this newly created position, Donahey will be responsible for actively providing outreach by the Institute to trade organizations, companies, and individuals to attract emerging technologies for development within ACI.
