Sto Corp. introduces StoColor® Dryonic® as part of the Sto iQ Technology™ coatings program

Sto Corp. yesterday announced the introduction of its new StoColor® Dryonic® exterior coating to the North American market, providing long-term moisture protection for virtually any substrate. StoColor Dryonic, like Sto’s other iQ Technology coatings, is modeled on principles found in nature. The shell of the African fog-basking beetle, covered in countless microscopic bumps, was the inspiration for the operating principle of this biomimetic coating. StoColor Dryonic features a unique micro-textured surface like that of the beetle’s shell. Rain and condensation cannot collect on this surface, preventing absorption of moisture by the facade.

Biomimicry in architectural design: The Bullitt Center

The idea for this article originated from an evening of watching “Xploration Nature Knows Best” from Steve Rotfield Productions. The episode, “Biobased Buildings” with host Danni Washington, encompassed a cohesive discussion on products and buildings that mimic nature — biomimicry in design. The show included two examples of biomimicry in design, StoColor® Lotusan® and the Bullitt Center.

Solarban 90 Solar Control Low-E Glass Solarban 90 glass combines industry-leading solar control performance with a true neutral-reflective clear-glass aesthetic. United with clear glass in a standard 1-inch IGU, Solarban 90 glass has a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.23, visible light transmittance of 51 percent and an LSG ratio of 2.22. Solarban 90 glass facilitates the use of smaller HVAC systems to reduce initial capital expenditures and long-term cooling costs. It also enables architects to design buildings with larger expanses of glass to promote daylighting, diminish the need for artificial lighting and connect building occupants to the outdoors.
