Using LEED, Living Building Challenge, and WELL, WRNS worked with Okland to craft a healthy, inspirational workplace that connects employees with one another and their natural environment. Strategies focused on using healthy, regional materials, maximizing daylighting and views, and creating a warm and engaging sense of place.

Construction starts post solid gain in August

Total construction starts rose 19% in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $793.3 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. Gains were seen in all three major building sectors: nonresidential building starts rose 16% and residential building climbed 12%, while nonbuilding construction jumped 40% over the month. While large projects certainly influenced the August gains, removing those projects would still have resulted in a gain for the month.

Akamai Technologies’ headquarters enhances staff experience in a unified, sustainable space

Akamai Technologies new global headquarters is designed to achieve both the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold certification and the International WELL Building Institute’s certification. The project team included: Boston Properties, Stantec (formerly ADD Inc.), Pickard Chilton, Turner Construction, Northstar Project & Real Estate Services, Acentech Incorporated, and Sasaki. Working closely with Acentech, Sasaki specified Rockfon’s acoustic ceiling systems, which were provided by Merrimack Building Supply and installed by Allan Construction.

New medical and veterinary facilities at Tyndall Air Force Base awarded LEED Silver

The newly modernized and expanded medical clinic and a new veterinary clinic at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla., have been designated LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The $53.4 million design-build project – completed by Hoefer Wysocki and JE Dunn Construction – included extensive renovations to the three-story, 69,044-sq. ft. medical clinic as well as the design and construction of a new 2,267-sq. ft. veterinary clinic, Building 1309, to provide essential care to Military Working Dogs and the pets of military families.

AIA to launch new program to advance leadership pathways for Ethnically Diverse Women

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is launching a new program to promote ethnically diverse women into leadership positions within the AIA. Next2Lead was initiated by AIA Resolution 18-3 which was intended to ensure that the AIA is developing education, systems and processes that are inclusive for the short and long term. Within the AIA, ethnically diverse women make up only five percent of the total membership and 0.4 percent of the entire profession in the U.S.

The Virtual Fall Conference will take place Oct. 6-8 and will feature updated market size and economic forecasts, as well as residential and commercial construction trends resulting from the continually evolving COVID-19 pandemic.

Dodge Momentum Index inches up in August

Dodge Data & Analytics reports that the Dodge Momentum Index increased 1.8% in August. The commercial component rose 3.3%, while the institutional component moved 1.2% lower. The August increase in the overall Momentum Index is the second consecutive rise and a further sign that the construction sector continues to post a modest recovery following the large declines in April and June. This recovery, though, is uneven.
