Moderator Michael Collins, managing director of Building Industry Advisors, asked questions of Katherine Judge, economist for CIBC Capital Markets, and Bill Norris, chief investment officer of CIBC Bank USA, reviewing recent economic activity and forecasting the national outlook with economic indicators for both countries.

New Mexico architect Robert M. Calvani inaugurated as NCARB President

Robert M. Calvani, FAIA, NCARB, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was inaugurated as the president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) at its 2020 Annual Business Meeting. As president, Calvani will lead the organization that supports the 55 U.S. architectural licensing boards in their mission to protect the public health, safety, and welfare.

Architecture billings downward trajectory moderates

Demand for design services in May saw few signs of rebounding following a record drop in billings the month prior, according to a new report from The American Institute of Architects (AIA). “A large portion of the design and construction industry remains mired in  steep cutbacks as many businesses and organizations are still trying to figure out what actions make sense in this uncertain economic environment,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “There are growing signs of activity beginning to pick up in some areas, but others are seeing a pause as pandemic concerns continue to grow.”

ASLA on passage of the Great American Outdoors Act

The Great American Outdoors Act, a bill long supported by ASLA and the landscape architects they represent, would require Congress to fully and permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and create the National Parks and Public Lands Legacy Restorations Fund to help address maintenance backlogs in national parks and public lands.

Applications open for communities to pilot new buildings and housing benchmarks

The Alliance for National & Community Resilience (ANCR), a member of the International Code Council’s family of solutions, has opened the application process for communities to join an in-depth piloting program for new buildings and housing benchmarks. As part of the program, communities will participate in ANCR’s Community Resilience Benchmarks (CRB) system, which supports communities in evaluating their current resilience and identifying strategies for improvement. Uniquely, this system assesses the social, organizational and infrastructural aspects of communities to enable examination of the community’s vulnerabilities and strengths.
