Construction starts decline in March

“Considering the calamity that occurred towards the end of March as the fallout from the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) hit the economy, construction starts held up rather well,” stated Richard Branch Chief Economist for Dodge Data & Analytics. “Construction starts in March were unlikely to be greatly impacted as projects that broke ground during the month likely had materials sourced and in-place and labor booked well ahead of the scheduled groundbreaking.”

EIMA announces new board of directors for 2020/2022

The EIFS Industry Members Association (EIMA) is pleased to announce the election of its new board of directors effective immediately. Steve Kennedy of Dow Construction Materials has been elected by the EIMA Board of Directors as the EIMA President for the 2020/2022 term. Mr. Kennedy is an active member of EIMA who has served on various committees, and most recently, as the vice president on the board of directors.

IIBEC elects 2020 Board of Directors

The International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) conducted their first-ever “virtual” Annual Meeting of the Members on March 30, 2020. In addition, the first female was elected to the Executive Committee, Amy Peevey, who is this year’s Secretary/Treasurer. This comes on the heels of the first-ever female Board member, Jennifer Hogan, who was elected as Region VII director in 2019.

The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) yesterday announced the addition of four renowned industry, academic and public health leaders from the U.S., United Kingdom, China and Singapore as the newest co-chairs of its Task Force on COVID-19 and other Respiratory Infections: Prevention and Preparedness, Resilience and Recovery. They join expert co-chairs from the U.S. and others from China who will help define the critical role buildings, organizations and communities play in reducing the health burden from this and other infectious diseases.

ACI Foundation announces re-election of trustees

The ACI Foundation announced yesterday the re-election of two trustees— Joseph Bracci and Antonio Nanni. They join Michael J. Schneider, current Chair of the Board of Trustees, and six other serving trustees. The ACI Foundation is a non-profit organization established by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to promote progress, innovation, and collaboration by supporting research and scholarships, while also serving as an independent resource to provide thought leadership and strategic direction for the concrete industry.

Dodge Momentum Index eases back in March

The drop in March was present in both components of Dodge Data & Analytics’ Momentum Index – the commercial component fell 0.8%, while the institutional component was 0.2% lower. It is still very early on in the COVID-19 crisis and March’s data would not fully capture any potential impact of the pandemic on construction planning. Dodge will be monitoring the progress of the projects entering the planning process and will provide frequent updates as the crisis evolves.
