FGIA announces new Board of Directors, strategic plan at inaugural conference

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) Annual Conference held last week in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida featured an introduction to the 2020 Board of Directors. Since FGIA is the result of having combined the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) as of the first of this year, the FGIA Board of Directors includes representatives who actively served in leadership roles within either of the separate associations.

FGIA releases new Surface Temperature Assessment for Condensation Evaluation of Exterior Wall Systems

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has developed a new document providing a standard procedure for the measurement of surface temperatures to be used in the condensation evaluation of exterior walls under laboratory conditions. “AAMA 501.9 is another optional test that can be performed in conjunction with a project specific curtain wall mock-up,” said Greg McKenna (Kawneer), vice chair of the Wall Mock-up Condensation Evaluation Work Group. “It uses a similar test apparatus to that used in AAMA 501.5, ‘Test Method for Thermal Cycling of Exterior Walls.'”

The PCI Design Awards, now in its 57th year, showcase the creative and innovative use of precast and prestressed concrete in a variety of applications. PCI also selects several projects for special awards that are judged on similar criteria to the building and transportation projects, as well as additional requirements, including industry advancement, sustainable design, technology, and designs using all-precast concrete solutions.

Architecture billings continue growth into 2020

Starting the year on a strong note, architecture firm billings strengthened slightly in January, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA). “Despite the continued presence of volatility in the economy, design activity has begun to accelerate in recent months,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Even with the ongoing challenges facing the nonresidential construction sector, this upturn points to at least modest growth over the coming year.”

Construction starts move lower in January

Construction starts move lower in January

Total construction starts slipped 6% from December to January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $759.2 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. All three major categories moved lower in January — residential building starts fell 8%, nonresidential building lost 6%, and nonbuilding starts moved 2% lower.

AIA selects recipients for the 2020 Young Architects and Associates Awards

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced yesterday that is has selected 22 recipients for the AIA Young Architects Award and five recipients for the Associates Award. The AIA Young Architects Award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the architecture profession early in their careers.
