The award, given by the APA’s Sustainable Communities Division, supports planners and related professionals in their efforts to foster a sustainable and resilient future. Mayor Emanuel announces City Council approval of major building code modernization to enable safer, more affordable, sustainable and innovative construction

City Council yesterday voted to adopt a major update to the Chicago Building Code that will better align the city’s construction requirements with up-to-date model codes and national standards. The new code represents the first comprehensive revisions to the building code in 70 years and will make construction in Chicago more affordable by expanding options to design and build with a wider range of materials and technologies. Chicago is now among the first major jurisdictions in the U.S. to adopt the 2018 International Building Code.

Bipartisan congressmen unveil “Invest in America Act”

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and The Real Estate Roundtable (RER) are pledging support for the “Invest in America Act” (H.R. 2210), which was unveiled yesterday by U.S. Reps. John Larson (D-CT) and Kenny Marchant (R-TX). The legislation has the potential to create as many as 284,000 American jobs and attract as much as $125 billion in global investment in U.S. communities, which would support addressing America’s aging buildings and crumbling infrastructure.
