Thaden School’s building designs inspired by agriculture, aviation and a classic sports car

Thaden School in Bentonville, Arkansas, celebrates the class of 2021 – the first to graduate from this new independent middle and high school. As the next academic year begins, returning students will be welcomed back to an expanded offering on its 30-acre campus. The three of the newest school buildings – “Reels,” “Wheels” and the performing arts center – were designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects and feature architectural coil coatings by Sherwin-Williams.

Aramco and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) announce the launch of NEx: A Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials to develop and promote the use of nonmetallic materials in the construction sector. “The Center’s mission will be to collaborate globally on using nonmetallic materials in the built environment by driving research, education, awareness and technology adoption,” said Jeffrey W. Coleman, ACI President. “Expanding incorporation of nonmetallic materials and products in the built environment will improve sustainability, contribute to a lower carbon footprint, and enhance the durability and longevity of structures.”

Silicon Valley landmark competition winner announced

Urban Confluence Silicon Valley announced that Breeze of Innovation, designed by Fernando Jerez and Belén Pérez de Juan of SMAR Architecture Studio, has been named winner of the worldwide open ideas competition for an iconic landmark in Silicon Valley. The competition jury, comprised of local, national, and international design and place-making experts, selected the winner from an impressive 963 submissions from 72 countries on six continents. Located at Arena Green at Guadalupe Park and Gardens in San José, the project is slated to go before the San José City Council in May 2021 for approval of the winning design.

Architecture billings climb into positive territory after a year of monthly declines

Continuing the positive momentum of a nearly three-point bump in January, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) reached its first positive mark since February 2020, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA). February marked the first time the design contract score rose back into positive territory since the pandemic began with a score of 51.6 compared to 48.8 in January.

February sees further decline in national construction starts

Total construction starts fell 2% in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $797.3 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. Nonbuilding construction starts posted a solid gain after rebounding from a weak January, however, residential and nonresidential building starts declined, leading to a pullback in overall activity.
