ASLA celebrates major advocacy win as permanent authorization of the Land & Water Conservation Fund is signed into law

“From Black Rock Sanctuary in Pennsylvania, to North Tangipahoa Parish Park in Louisiana, to Crescent Harbor Playground in Alaska, LWCF gives landscape architects the ability to plan and design parks and recreational facilities that are resilient, beneficial, and beautiful outdoor spaces,” said Nancy Somerville, Hon. ASLA, executive vice president and CEO of the American Society of Landscape Architects. “The permanent authorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund is an incredible victory for ASLA, our members, and our partners. This critical program will help lead our nation to a healthier, more sustainable future that is accessible for all.”

2019 Wood Design Awards winners display aesthetics, ingenuity and sustainability in wood building design

“I’ve heard people call it a wood revolution but whatever the term, this year’s nominees seem to reflect genuine interest in maximizing the potential of wood building design in this country,” said Jennifer Cover, WoodWorks’ President and CEO. “At one end of the spectrum, winners include an 8-story apartment building, which exemplifies the interest we’re seeing in taller wood structures; at the other, an adaptive re-use project that includes original wood framing from the 1880s. As always, it’s interesting to read the motivations for using wood—from innovation and a more sustainable built environment, which often go hand in hand, to resilience, economics, and the desire for a modern, exposed wood aesthetic. Once again, a common thread is that this year’s winning projects showcase the use of wood in all its versatile glory.”

Women’s careers advance to the top in the window film industry

This March the International Window Film Association (IWFA) honors women for their contributions to North America and the world and it is highlighting how far women have advanced in the window film industry. Women in the U.S. earn on average 81 percent of what men make, but the gender pay gap is narrower in the construction industry where women earn on average 96 percent of what men make.
