The American Concrete Institute (ACI), an organization whose mission it is to develop and disseminate consensus-based knowledge on concrete and its uses, will be conducting a Press Conference at World of Concrete on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, to announce important news regarding a Concrete Repair Subscription, and Contractor’s Guide to Quality Concrete Construction, 4th edition, published jointly by ACI and the American Society of Concrete Contractors.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) announced future 2019 and 2020 conference dates and locations, currently available on the AAMA Events web page. Early bird registration is now open for February’s AAMA 2019 Annual Conference in Indian Wells (Palm Springs), California, but AAMA events’ sites and dates for the rest of 2019 and into 2020 are now also available.

AAMA to host 5K run/walk in honor of Kim Flanary

In honor of Milgard Windows & Doors’ engineering director and AAMA Board Member, Kim Flanary, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) is hosting a 5K run/walk during the AAMA Annual Conference. The event will take place at 5:30 a.m., Wed., Feb. 27, honoring a lifetime of leadership. Flanary, who passed away earlier this fall, was active with AAMA for 14 years. During that time, Flanary served on 74 committees including nine of AAMA’s 11 top-level governing Board committees.

The Collaborative Achievement Award recognizes and encourages distinguished achievements of design professionals, clients, organizations, architect teams, knowledge communities and others who have had a beneficial influence on or advanced the architectural profession.

World Architecture Festival and INSIDE 2018 celebrates another successful year in its eleventh edition

The 2018 World Architecture Festival (WAF) enjoyed a 10% year-on-year increase in the number of international architects coming together from 28-30 November in Amsterdam to celebrate excellence in the profession. More than 530 shortlisted projects in the annual WAF awards were presented live by architectural practices from around the world and judged during the event. This year, women made up at least 40% of award judges. Some of the super jury judges included Nathalie de Vries, Lesley Lokko and Li Xiadong.

New National Institute of Building Sciences study finds that modern, regularly updated building codes mitigate costly damage

“Disasters are only expected to increase in frequency and severity, so as an industry we need to work collaboratively on how to adapt the built environment to face even greater challenges,” said the Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO.  “The findings of this report offer encouragement that our work, slow and steady as it may be, is well worth the effort. The Code Council has a long and close partnership with NIBS, and we look forward to continued engagement with the Institute on these important issues.”

Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates-designed Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London receives AIA’s Twenty-five Year Award

Architects Robert Venturi, FAIA, and Denise Scott Brown, FAIA—VSBA founding principals—sought to relate the new wing to the National Gallery while maintaining the wing’s own identity as a work of modern architecture. A play on Italian Mannerism, the Sainsbury Wing demonstrates the architects’ sophisticated but ironic acknowledgement of modern conditions while thoroughly exploring classical architecture’s conventions.
