Conference to highlight the future of architecture

Everyone’s getting ready for North America’s largest “can’t miss” annual gathering of architects and design professionals — The AIA Conference on Architecture 2019 (A’19). A’19 is designed around the theme “Blueprint for a Better Future,” recognizing the critical challenges facing the world’s communities today, and bringing awareness to the future of architecture and the profession. Programming will address topics including, sustainability; equity, diversity and inclusion; affordable housing; biophilic design; building energy performance; and revitalization.

AIA awards four projects with research grants

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced recipients of its Upjohn Research Initiative grants. Four projects will each receive up to $30,000 in grants for research that will advance the future of architectural design and practice. The AIA Upjohn Research Initiative supports applied research projects that enhance the value of design and professional practice knowledge.

These projects include Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) Tool, An Innovative Approach to Concrete Confinement Reinforcement, Effective Characterizations of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) for Concrete Applications, and more.

The Portland Cement Association releases new report on the value of resilient design and construction

The Portland Cement Association (PCA), representing America’s cement manufacturers, released a new report focused on resiliency titled The Real Value of Resilient Construction. The report demonstrates through historical data, evidence from external sources, and comparisons of building materials that resilient design and construction built with concrete leads to longer lasting buildings due to concrete’s ability to stand up to normal wear and tear and resistance to extreme weather events.

HPD Open Standard Version 2.2 released

The Health Product Declaration (HPD) Collaborative has released HPD Open Standard Version 2.2, the latest update to its industry-leading open standard for transparency and reporting for building product contents and associated health information.  This update introduces a major new feature – the Supplier HPD, a specification and methodology for enabling standard-based ingredient reporting and transparency throughout the building product supply chain. Using the HPD Open Standard, manufacturers are able to provide accurate, reliable and consistent information to decision makers – architects, designers, building owners – to enable the selection of products featuring transparency and healthier building materials.

Dodge Momentum Index dips in April

Dodge Momentum Index dips in April

The overall Dodge Momentum Index is down 8.5% since April 2018, with the commercial component 4.7% lower and the institutional component 13.9% lower. However, over the past several months the Momentum Index has moved in a crablike fashion with neither strong gains or losses. This suggests that there continues to be a reasonably healthy number of projects in the planning pipeline to support a moderate level of construction activity in the coming months.
