March 9 FGIA webinar to highlight study of impact of cavity reduction on triple glazed IG units

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) will host a webinar entitled “The Impact of Cavity Reduction on Triple Glazed IG Units” on Tues., March 9 at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. During this webinar, attendees will learn about the recent study commissioned by the Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). It was undertaken to help insulating glass unit (IGU) manufacturers understand the impact that glass deflection can have on the energy performance of triple glazed IG units.

Sustainably designed Palm Springs ‘Agrihood’ unveils high-design social center

Miralon, the sustainably designed “agrihood” community in Palm Springs, has unveiled its extensive new amenity center: Miralon Club. Some of the world’s leading design influencers collaborated on Miralon Club. The architecture is by Robert Hidey Architects, (RHA) which also helped conceive Miralon’s progressive plan transforming the golf course, as well as the community’s overall design guidelines.

KWK Architects repurposes 7.8-acre industrial site, warehouse into new office space for Washington University School of Medicine

When the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) purchased nearly eight acres of industrial space in 2018 for offsite offices and additional parking, it selected higher education design experts KWK Architects to lead the transformation. KWK designed a new façade and roof for the single-story warehouse to bring it up to current energy codes and update its appearance. A new, thicker insulated roof was concealed with horizontal metal panels to unify the new material palette with the existing brick on the complex’s north end. Daylighting features were designed to include a new storefront and north and east-facing sloped skylights to bring daylight into the interior spaces.

View Smart Windows transform St. John’s Terminal in New York City

View announced that View Smart Windows are being installed at St. John’s Terminal, the 12-story, 1.3-million-square-foot commercial office under development by Oxford Properties Group. Designed by the sustainable architecture firm COOKFOX and with more than 400 linear feet of floor-to-ceiling smart windows from View, St. John’s Terminal will offer occupants unobstructed, west-facing views of the Hudson River and the widest sunset in New York City.

Registration open for FGIA Leadership Development Program through March 31

Registration for the third installment of the Leadership Development Program from the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) is open through March 31, with the first session taking place April 14. This program is intended to help those who already have industry expertise strengthen their soft skills. Oak Moser, a leadership coach with Coaching 2 Connect, facilitates this professional education offering, which is a legacy program of the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) that will continue to be offered by FGIA.

Construction starts down to start 2021

Total construction starts dropped 4% in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $794.3 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. Nonresidential building starts were flat in January, while nonbuilding starts dropped 10% and residential starts were 4% lower.

EXTECH’s LIGHTWALL system transforms old power plant into Beloit College’s new Powerhouse for student recreation

Opened in Aug. 2020, Beloit College transformed a decommissioned coal-burning power station located along Wisconsin’s Rock River into a new field house focused on student recreation and wellness. The former Blackhawk Generating Station was composed of three buildings constructed mostly of brick and concrete from 1908 to 1949. Studio Gang re-imagined the structure as a unified, 120,000-square-foot student union and recreation center. Now known as the Powerhouse, the $38 million renovated building is targeting LEED® Silver certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
