BUENA PARK, Calif., (February 14, 2018) – Outside the Lines (OTL), a design-build construction company that specializes in creating one-of-a-kind water features, rockwork and themed environments, has been selected to design and construct a 45-foot tall artificial mountain along with spectacular water features and other themed elements to bring to life the new Butterfly Palladium, a $25 million entertainment destination in the Southern California City of Buena Park. Butterfly Palladium will be reminiscent of a visit to a tropical Costa Rica-inspired rainforest.
“As a new entertainment destination, Butterfly Palladium will meet the demand of today’s consumers, who increasingly prefer experience-driven attractions,” says J. Wickham Zimmerman, Chief Executive Officer of OTL. “The new Butterfly Palladium will create an interactive environment that will appeal to families, groups, and individuals, and will attract visitors from throughout Southern California.”
OTL is working closely with the project’s developer, Rubin Stahl, whose prior projects include the largest shopping mall in North America (West Edmonton Mall in Canada) and numerous zoos and aquariums; as well as Lila Stahl, President of Butterfly Palladium; lead architect Brissette Architects, Inc.; the City of Buena Park; associate architect amk STUDIO; general contractor Acon Development, Inc.; and landscape architect Conceptual Design & Planning Company (CDPC), among others.
Serving as the focal point of the development’s butterfly atrium, OTL’s new mountain will be surrounded by several of the firm’s signature waterfall features, as well as 2,500 square feet of rockwork for artificial streams, close to 8,000 square feet of realistic earth texture paving, and of course, live butterflies. The rainforest-inspired design will incorporate planter pockets into the rockwork, allowing plant life to grow and thrive just as it would in Central American rainforests.
“Together, these features will deliver immersive entertainment, making the Butterfly Palladium a must-see for both tourists and local Southern Californians,” says Zimmerman. “The attraction will be tremendously interactive, as well as educational, providing multiple reasons to visit on numerous occasions.”
The entire 53,000 square-foot themed destination will include sanctuaries for butterflies and bees, a 3-D movie theater, restaurant, gift shop, and a 10,000 square-foot atrium designed to host special events. The destination will also offer educational highlights to attract students and school visits.
“This project is an excellent example of creativity, imagination, and precise execution, all of which will come together to create a high-traffic destination that will be well-loved for years to come,” says Wickham.
Buena Park Mayor Virginia Vaughn agrees, noting “Buena Park is emerging as a capital of entertainment destinations. The work being done at the Butterfly Palladium will create an authentic taste of the Costa Rican rainforest, promoting tourism and attracting thousands of guests each year.”
Butterfly Palladium is located at 7711 Beach Boulevard in Buena Park, California and will serve as the newest addition to the City’s revamped entertainment corridor.
Construction is underway on the attraction, which is expected to be complete in 2019.
