Waller, Todd & Sadler, a Woolpert Company, provided integrated design services for the renovation of Café 1201 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Located inside Webb University Center, the facility offers students easy access to food options throughout the day at a site that serves as a social hub for the university community.
Woolpert Architect and Practice Leader Stelios Xystros said the project transformed a “tired, all-you-care-to-eat dining facility into a bright and modern dining center.” The facility houses restaurant brands that include Steak ’n Shake, Chick-fil-A and QDOBA Mexican Eats, and has a fourth brand in design. The project also added a catering kitchen and a smaller residential dining concept, Ruby’s Café, named after longtime employee Ruby Milteer.
“In the college food service environment, you must constantly make changes to elevate student excitement,” Xystros said. “Choice is a key part of the student dining experience. Beyond the traditional meal plans, universities are increasing options for students by incorporating popular restaurant brands in campus buildings. These renovations were designed to provide ODU students with a versatile, state-of-the-art university dining destination.”
This renovation took place over 10 months and welcomed students in early 2020.
