New magazine to represent a unified voice for the international interior design profession

(May 31, 2017) – The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) announced a new joint initiative that will bring their individual membership magazines—ICON and D—together into one new publication with broadened perspective and reach.

As the most influential design associations in the U.S. and Canada, ASID and IDC are perfectly poised to create a publication that gets to the heart of what drives the design industry and the talented professionals that their respective organizations represent, support, and enrich through their programming. Designers, educators, students, manufacturers and suppliers will all have access to this new North American voice for the industry.

The magazine builds on a history of the two organizations putting their collective strengths together for the benefit of the design community at large. In collaborating on programs, like GoPro and Impact Summit, the alignment of the organizations and their shared belief that design impacts lives has been notable. The common goals of both organizations have been displayed through their respective individual publications; now, they will be further enhanced by a concerted effort that brings readers unique design perspectives from around the world.

“Working with ASID has proven to be an important aspect of our annual programming so combining our editorial pages was a logical next step for a shared vision of design on both sides of the border,” says Tony Brenders, CEO, IDC. “Add the benefit of providing manufacturers and suppliers with an opportunity to reach their clients internationally through one unified magazine and the answer became clear very quickly.”

“The ability to produce one North American magazine with content centered on ‘Design Impacts Lives’ was extremely appealing to ASID,” says Randy Fiser, CEO, ASID. “Our new magazine will continue to provide the community at large with provocative, educational, and inspirational content.”

The ASID and IDC missions as associations are to advance the profession of interior design and build greater audience awareness of the significant, positive impact their members bring to the built environment and to humankind. By joining together to create one publication that represents their common beliefs and goals, the organizations have added a new relevant voice to the design dialogue.

The first collaborative issue will be released this summer. An advisory committee from across North America has been established to contribute to the editorial vision for the new magazine, beginning with the selection of a new name for the new publication.

About ASID
The American Society of Interior Designers believes that design transforms lives. ASID serves the full range of the interior design profession and practice through the Society’s programs, networks, and advocacy. We thrive on the strength of cross-functional and interdisciplinary relationships among designers of all specialties, including workplace, healthcare, retail and hospitality, education, institutional, and residential. We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from evidence-based and humancentric design to social responsibility, wellbeing, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide.

ASID was founded over 40 years ago when two organizations became one, but its legacy dates back to the early 1930s. As we celebrate nearly 85 years of industry leadership, we are leading the future of interior design, continuing to integrate the advantages of local connections with national reach, of small firms with big, and of the places we live with the places we work, play, and heal.
