When global architectural firm HKS met with ProMedica to discuss the regional health system’s plans to consolidate 11 physician practices into its new Health and Wellness Center in Sylvania, Ohio, the medical provider made its expectations clear: the building needed to foster connectivity, flexibility and a sense of place within the community. Portland apartment building achieves LEED Gold Certification

Sustainable features in the apartment units include large double-pane, low E, insulated windows that provide natural light, high-efficiency systems for lighting and mechanical (HVAC), water-efficient fixtures and Energy Star appliances. There is preferred parking for electric vehicles, and there are recycling facilities on-site for residents. Low VOC emitting materials were used during construction, and construction waste was safely recycled, reused and disposed of accordingly.

In response to the legislation’s passage – which is now awaiting the President’s signature – 2018 AIA President Carl Elefante, FAIA, stated “With employment opportunities in architecture projected to grow over the next decade, for the first time this legislation clarifies that states can use federal career and technical education funding to modernize their architecture curriculums, which 49 out of 50 states have not updated in years. In so doing, it also legally recognizes architecture as part of a STEM education.”

“A Bridge Home” project to assist transition to long-term housing in Los Angeles

ULI held intensive charrettes with three architecture firms (DLR Group, Studio One Eleven and JFAK Architects) and with three landscape architecture firms (EPT Design, Relm and SWA). The teams focused on solving three site challenges: a 50-bed site; a 100-bed site; and a 150-bed site. In addition, ULI Los Angeles is collaborating with CBRE and Gensler to identify sites for the 50/100/150 bed needs and a list of all sites in each City Council district which are owned by the Federal, State, County or City governments. ULI will then work with the City Council members (at their request) to determine the best sites in their districts.
