AIA 2030 Commitment invites engineers

Engineers can now join architects in signing up for The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2030 Commitment to measure progress towards reducing energy and carbon in the design of buildings. The program provides a framework of energy targets, metrics and a comprehensive data tool that allows signatories to the commitment to track progress towards net zero carbon by 2030. Currently there are 522 firms signed onto the 2030 Commitment. Last year, the program had 21 percent more firms actively engaged in the program and sharing annual data.

New Research: Better Cities, Better Climate – Better Returns on Investment?

New research from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and the Coalition for Urban Transitions, supported by a consortium of leading global real estate investors and managers, shows that well-designed, compact cities are better for investors as well as citizens and the environment. Entitled Supporting Smart Urban Development: Successful investing in density, the report finds that cities with “good density”—dense development that is thoughtfully designed to promote a high quality of life—may be more resilient and prosperous in the long term. According to the report, these cities are more likely to provide higher risk-adjusted real estate investment returns than cities without “good density”. It marks the first-ever study attempting to quantify the impact of quality of place on real estate investment returns.

Canada Green Building Council certifies Bentall Kennedy office building as Canada’s first Zero Carbon Building – Performance certification

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) announced that 100 Murray Street in Ottawa, ON has been awarded Canada’s first Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) – Performance certification. The Bentall Kennedy managed, Class A commercial office building achieved LEED Gold for Existing Buildings certification in 2016 and, through continued energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures, was able to demonstrate a balance of zero carbon emissions for this certification.

America’s Cement Producers Urge Congress to Reauthorize Legislation to Maintain and Improve the Nation’s Water Infrastructure

The Portland Cement Association (PCA) June 6, urged Congress to reauthorize federal legislation needed to build, maintain and improve the nation’s water infrastructure. The U.S. House of Representatives is considering two-year reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2018 (H.R. 8), while the U.S. Senate is considering companion legislation, America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA) of 2018 (S. 2800).
