King County Library System’s Tukwila Library nominated for environmental leadership

Designed by Perkins+Will and constructed by Edifice Construction, the 10,000 square-foot Tukwila Library opened in April 2017, replacing the former Foster Library. The Tukwila Library’s sustainable elements include regionally-sourced wood throughout its interior, native plants for landscaping, and a green roof with heat and drought-tolerant native plants which helps regulate interior temperatures and reduces storm water runoff.

Hoefer Wysocki Architecture completes design for Kansas State University’s Dave and Elle Learning Commons

Hoefer Wysocki’s project scope included architectural programing, planning and design. Design features of the Dave and Elle Learning Commons encourage a collegial experience, focused on the interaction of people and technology. It will include 20 collaboration spaces, a digital innovation center, a 100-seat auditorium, a café, open seating, a large classroom and two seminar rooms. The library offers students five uniquely-designed zones to meet, study, relax, invent and share ideas. Driven by the notion of creating a library without books, the Dave and Elle Learning Commons will provide a natural space for students to interact and work in groups, while also offering areas for direct instruction and controlled, introspective study.

Warmth, sustainability and cost are mentioned fairly consistently and 2018 was no exception. But comments this year also emphasized structural performance, the desire to create healthy, resilient and engaging structures, energy efficiency, meeting challenges of scale, and flexible spaces that can be adapted as needs change. It’s exciting to see examples of innovative systems and technologies, but this year’s projects are a reminder of the many reasons building designers gravitate to wood.”

The Spheres Blossom at Amazon’s Urban HQ in Seattle

The Spheres feature treehouse meeting rooms, river and waterfall features, paludariums, a four-story living wall, and epiphytic trees. They are home to more than 400 species spanning five continents and 50 countries, and many of the plants have journeyed from botanical gardens, tree nurseries, and conservation programs from around the globe. Many of the plants inside The Spheres are from cloud forest ecosystems, where plants thrive on mountainsides at an altitude ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 feet. Plants in these ecosystems have adapted to cooler temperatures, which makes their climate needs comfortable for people, too.
