Woolpert renovation of University of North Carolina Charlotte Academic Complex complete

The $17 million renovation of the Academic Complex at the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) is complete. The university contracted with Woolpert in 2015 to upgrade the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), install a fire protection system, improve accessibility, provide interior finishes and exterior windows, and address minor building settlement at these buildings.

Construction starts lose ground in July

Total construction starts fell 7% in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $631.6 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. The decline was due to a significant pullback in the nonbuilding segment, which fell 31% from June to July. Nonresidential building starts rose 3% while residential building starts increased 2%.

Expansion of Mainline Health’s Lankenau Medical Center Emergency Department

As Mainline Health requires all facilities to meet LEED standards, the Lankenau Medical Center ED in Wynnewood, Pa., was designed with LEED certification in mind. In order to achieve this, FCA outfitted the space with low-emitting furniture, finishes, and maximized indoor air quality. The facility also features a green roof for rainwater management and visual aesthetics by providing patient floors looking down onto the roof with a view of green space.

Ainsworth & Dunn in Seattle

The historic Ainsworth & Dunn (A&D) Building was built in 1902 as a warehouse for the salmon packing company Ainsworth & Dunn. It embodies the historic relationship between industrial warehouses, their waterfront piers, and the railroad. When the building changed hands in 2015, its new owner sought to honor and preserve the warehouse while integrating it into a larger mixed-use development. The project included the adaptive re-use of, and third story addition to, the A&D Building, construction of a six-story mixed-use apartment building directly to its south, and pedestrian improvements on all sides.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is releasing a new report today detailing strategies that can help mitigate risk of COVID-19 in multifamily housing. “Strategies for Safer Multifamily Housing” includes a seven-step Risk Management Plan for Buildings that multifamily housing owners and operators can utilize to assess hazards, apply architectural or engineering strategies, and reduce risk of virus transmission in buildings.

High-performance composites bridge offers cost-effective, rapid solution for rural Tennessee community

Morgan County Highway Superintendent Joe Henry Miller and county officials are partnering with private industry and researchers at the University of Tennessee (UT) and the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, or IACMI—The Composites Institute®, in Knoxville to create an affordable bridge that can be installed quickly and will safely meet transportation needs in the rural community.  “As part of our objectives for sustainability and strategic planning, our goal in this demonstration is to develop a comprehensive case study for comparing the total costs of a typical concrete bridge and one using an FRP bridge deck. We will share the case study framework and results with federal, state and local officials, transportation departments and the civil engineering community so FRP composites will be more of a ‘known’ to them,” said John Unser, IACMI technology impact manager.
