Arup’s urbanism experts will judge creative and implementable concepts for improving the quality of metropolitan life

NEW YORK, May 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Arup, the global design and engineering firm for the built environment, announces the 2017 Doggerel Writing Contest. Participants are invited to describe an under-celebrated idea that holds great potential to shape better cities. The proposed idea should have clear relevance to the relationship between design and the built environment. Submissions that explore various aspects of this relationship, whether technical, economic, or political, are welcome.

Eligibility, Submission Guidelines, and Deadline
The competition is open to design professionals, journalists, students, and anyone with an interest in the built environment. Each submission should be 800-1,500 words in length, and not previously published in any form. Multiple submissions are permitted; only digital entries not exceeding 5MB will be accepted. Submissions are due by June 19, 2017.

The Jury
Entries will be evaluated by three Arup leaders whose work is focused on the nature of cities: Francesca Birks, editor of Doggerel, the online magazine of Arup in the Americas; Fiona Cousins, an Arup Fellow and coauthor of Two Degrees: The Built Environment and Our Changing Climate; and Brian Swett, Cities Leader for Arup in the Americas.

Prizes and Publication
The jury will select one grand prize submission, whose author or team will receive an award of $1,000. Up to two runners-up will each receive awards of $250. Winners will be announced in September 2017, and published in a future edition of Doggerel.
