Former HUD Secretary, Zipcar Founder, Miami-Dade Resilience Chief to Offer Insights at ULI’s Fall Meeting

WASHINGTON (September 19, 2017) — The role of the development community in creating cities that are more resilient — not just to natural disasters but a variety of disruptors —- will be discussed during a special media-only event at the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) 2017 Fall Meeting, set for October 23-26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles.

A media lunch, set for Wednesday, October 25 from 12 noon to 1 p.m., will feature three urban experts discussing successful city building from three perspectives: former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros, on social equity; Miami-Dade County Chief Resilience Officer James Murley, on weather-related resilience; and Zipcar Founder Robin Chase, on technology that is making cities more resilient and inclusive. ULI Global CEO Patrick L. Phillips will moderate the event.

The media event is one highlight of the Fall Meeting, which will feature numerous discussions on a wide range of urban issues such as housing affordability, gentrification, the rise of suburbs, driverless technology, demographic shifts, and new economic drivers — all with a focus on the short- and long-term implications for real estate. The meeting will also include programming specific to the extraordinary transformation of downtown Los Angeles into a highly sought-after place to live as well as work.

NBA basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the chairman and chief executive officer of Magic Johnson Enterprises, an investment conglomerate valued at an estimated $1 billion dollars; Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan; and globally renowned architect Frank Gehry, who designed the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, will headline an impressive list of keynote speakers as well as thought leaders who are influencing the built environment through their work. In addition, findings from the highly anticipated Emerging Trends in Real Estate® 2018 survey will be discussed during a general session that spotlights the most favorable markets for investment and development next year. (Last year, Austin, Texas ranked first; Los Angeles took fifth place.)

Each day of the meeting will emphasize a separate area of focus:

  • Monday, October 23, will feature tours of the metro region’s most innovative developments led by those directly involved with the projects. (Many are sold out, but there may be some extra tickets available for some of the tours.)
  • Tuesday, October 24, has been designated as “vision day,” offering lessons learned from experts in the real estate industry and beyond.
  • Wednesday, October 25, is “trends day,” including what’s next for the residential, hospitality, office, industrial and retail sectors, as well as the impact of driverless transportation technology on all property types. Media-only briefing: “Getting Cities Right,” is from 12 noon to 1 pm.
  • Thursday, October 26, is “real estate deal day,” with opportunities for attendees to explore and initiate development projects, as well as share best practices in the art of making deals. (The Emerging Trends discussion will take place on the morning of October 26.)

As the largest of the institute’s events and the industry’s premier meeting, the annual ULI Fall Meeting routinely draws more than 6,500 members and guests, including internationally renowned land use experts representing all land use disciplines. The meeting’s real estate sessions are known for providing timely and relevant industry analyses, and for offering access to some of the globe’s most influential real estate leaders.

ULI’s Fall Meeting is the only industry gathering that covers all aspects of the industry and all issues affecting the industry. It’s the one place for new story ideas, new perspectives, new information and new sources. Registration is of course complimentary for the media. Please join us in Los Angeles!
