The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) is pleased to announce that Dr. David Yarbrough (R&D Services) is this year’s recipient of the Marty Hastings Award. The award was presented to Dr. Yarbrough during the CRRC’s virtual Annual General Membership meeting on June 16, 2021.

Dr. Yarbrough has been a valuable contributor and technical resource to the CRRC for over 20 years. He attended the CRRC’s first meeting during the early formation of the organization and would go on to serve as a long-standing member of the CRRC Technical Committee. Over his tenure, Dr. Yarbrough made many contributions to the CRRC, including supporting the organization through the research and development of its test protocols, including ASTM standards for solar reflectance and thermal emittance.

Dr. Yarbrough has had a long career that spans almost six decades in the fields of engineering, research, academia, instructional leadership, and consulting. A significant portion of his career has been dedicated to the research of roofing products, cool roof performance, and its promotion in the building science community.

Prior to R&D Services, Dr. Yarbrough worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Tennessee Technological University where he did extensive research and testing on multiple types of thermal insulation and building products. His work has been used to develop test methods and correlations that are still used to evaluate roofing products today. He is also widely recognized for his generosity in helping others understand the importance of radiative property testing. Whether it has been in the classroom setting, working alongside other experts, or taking time to teach others one on one, Dr. Yarbrough has made a lasting impact on this industry.

As part of this distinguished award, the CRRC has made a donation in Dr. Yarbough’s name to New Life International, whose mission is to provide safe water and deliver the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world.

In 2011, the CRRC Board of Directors created the Marty Hastings Award in honor of its longtime Board member, Treasurer, and Technical Committee member who passed away from cancer. Mr. Hastings contributed greatly to the CRRC and is fondly remembered for his upbeat attitude, enthusiasm, and sense of humor. To commemorate Mr. Hastings’ contributions to the organization, the CRRC created this annual award presented to a volunteer who has made outstanding contributions to the CRRC. Nominations for the award are solicited from the CRRC membership, and the recipient is selected by a Board of Directors-appointed committee. The award includes a $500 donation made in the recipient’s name to a charitable organization of his/her choice. Visit coolroofs.org to learn about past award recipients.

The CRRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1998 to develop accurate and credible methods for evaluating and labeling the radiative properties of roofing products, and to disseminate the information to all interested parties. In 2019, the CRRC expanded to include the rating of exterior wall products. Please contact the CRRC at info@coolroofs.org or (866) 465-2523 for more information on its programs
