Parking industry leaders recognized for driving sustainable mobility practices
ORLANDO, Fla. – (June 14, 2018) – At the 2018 IPI Conference & Expo, where more than 3,500 parking professionals from 30 countries gather to discuss industry trends and challenges, Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) recognized eight parking structures for achieving Parksmart certification. Parksmart is the world’s only rating system designed to advance sustainable mobility through smarter parking structure design and operation.
Among the parking structures recognized was West Village in Chengdu, China – the first parking structure to achieve Parksmart certification outside the U.S. The list of project certifications announced at the conference include:
• 1400 K Street – Washington, D.C. – Owned by Brookfield and operated by Impark
• 1600 Smith – Houston, Texas – Owned by Brookfield and operated by SP+
• Cal Poly Pomona Parking Garage #2 – Pomona, Calif. – Owned and operated by Cal Poly Pomona, DESMAN, Inc. parking consultant
• Wells Fargo Center – Los Angeles, Calif. – Owned by Brookfield and operated by ABM Parking Services
• Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Hibiscus and Palm Garages – Owned by Broward County Government and operated by SP+
• Javna Garaza Obilicev Venac – Belgrade, Serbia – Owned by Parking Servis and operated by JKP Parking Service Beograd
“Parking structures today play a key role in the development of our smart cities,” said Paul Wessel, director, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). “From on-demand services, such as car-sharing, to idle reduction technologies, parking structures are incorporating sustainable design and operations strategies to support a rapidly changing mobility network. The projects recognized at IPI are all contributing to creating healthier, more sustainable communities.”
Currently, Parksmart certified projects represent more than 25,000 parking spaces. Parksmart can also be used to support projects pursuing LEED certification. In 2018, USGBC’s LEED Steering Committee added select Parksmart measures to the LEED innovation catalog. A parking structure is often the first and last experience a building visitor has with a LEED project. Parksmart strategies enhance this experience by reducing environmental impact, reducing operating costs process and offering greater mobility choices.
