Two speakers will address the topics of product installation and plant safety at the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) Fall Conference (Sept. 30-Oct. 3). Richard Hawk, motivational safety speaker and trainer for Make Safety Fun, will give a keynote presentation entitled, “The Future of Safety in Manufacturing Plants.” Matt Risinger, owner of Risinger & Co., specializes in architect-driven projects and will discuss installation techniques.

The presentation will focus on the worsening U.S. labor and skills deficit. It will cover the difficulties of hiring and retaining workers, the causes of the deficit, the impact on companies and strategies firms have or are considering in order to reduce risks.

UL/CLEB seminar breaks down Canadian CSA A500 Building Guards Standard

Principal engineer Robert Jutras (UL/CLEB) hosted a seminar called, “The Canadian CSA A500 Building Guards Standard, Explained” during the 2019 Joint AAMA and IGMA Summer Conference. The CSA A500 Building Guards Standard was developed in response to stakeholders who saw the need for a standard for materials, design, construction, testing and performance of building guards, said Jutras. The standard is important because these protective barriers prevent accidental falls from one level to another.

Dr. Patrick Moore has been a leader in the international environmental field for over 45 years. He is a co-founder of Greenpeace and served for nine years as president of Greenpeace Canada and seven years as a director of Greenpeace International.

IGMA Glass Safety Awareness Council shares best practices, guidance for preventing workplace injuries

This past April, an Ontario worker was crushed after entering the barrier enclosure to troubleshoot a machine. In May 2019, a 24-year-old in Virginia was loading glass onto a truck and was killed after several hundred pounds of glass fell on him. In each of these examples, safety protocols were not followed. “A 24-year-old shouldn’t go to work in the morning and not come home at night,” said Burk. “No one should die at work in this day and age. It shouldn’t happen anymore.”
