“It’s always interesting to consider what the winning projects say about the state of wood design,” said Jennifer Cover, WoodWorks’ President and CEO. “Part of that is understanding what drove the design teams to choose wood. Warmth, sustainability and cost are mentioned fairly consistently and 2018 was no exception. But comments this year also emphasized structural performance, the desire to create healthy, resilient and engaging structures, energy efficiency, meeting challenges of scale, and flexible spaces that can be adapted as needs change. It’s exciting to see examples of innovative systems and technologies, but this year’s projects are a reminder of the many reasons building designers gravitate to wood.”

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced Klyde Warren Park, a freeway deck park in Dallas designed by OJB Landscape Architecture (OJB), as the recipient of the 2018 Collaborative Achievement Award. This award “recognizes and encourages distinguished achievements of allied professionals, clients, organizations, architect teams, knowledge communities, and others who have had a beneficial influence on or advanced the architectural profession.” The park will be honored at the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture in New York.

The Vilcek Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Vilcek Prizes in the Arts and Humanities, this year recognizing the field of architecture. Awarded annually, the prizes call attention to the breadth of immigrant contributions to the American arts and sciences. “The social, political, and cultural landscape of America has been shaped by generations of immigrant contributions,” says Marica Vilcek, cofounder and vice chairman of the Vilcek Foundation. “With the Vilcek Prizes in Architecture, we are pleased to recognize the many ways in which they have shaped its physical landscape as well—through bold, original designs, and through research that challenges the status quo, both in the building arts and in society.”

Stephen Ayers, FAIA, Architect of the Capitol, has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture. The Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture recognizes architects in the public and private sectors, public officials, or other individuals who design distinguished public facilities and/or who advocate for design excellence. Ayers will be honored at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York City.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) was honored to receive the 2017 Crystal Vision Partnership Award on Wednesday, as presented by World Vision at the humanitarian organization’s 18th Annual Crystal Vision Award Breakfast during the 2018 International Builders Show in Orlando. World Vision’s Partnership Award is given each year to a company within the industry that has partnered with the organization’s Storehouse Program for a minimum of three to five years.

Jorge Silvetti awarded 2018 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion

The AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion honors an individual who has been intensely involved in architecture education for more than a decade and whose teaching has influenced a broad range of students. Silvetti has taught at Harvard University Graduate School of Design  (GSD) since 1975 as a gifted professor and mentor.  Argentinian by birth, Silvetti’s influence at GSD may have been most strongly felt from 1995-2002, when he served as chair of the architecture program.

Lenore M. Lucey honored with 2018 Kemper Award
