A gap in the coiling products market began forming several years ago. Companies offered a wide variety of rolling grilles, yet many of them required a bulky 24” of headroom which is standard across the industry. CornellCookson’s new Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille works to close that gap as another way the company is building “Smart Solutions for Small Spaces.”
“A traditional rolling grille wraps around the shaft at 45-degree angles,” explains Siva Davuluri, director of product strategy for high performance doors at CornellCookson. “They continue to stack and stack until the grille is fully rolled up into the head-unit. This creates a significant number of voids and a large coil.Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille decreases those angles through patented curved vertical links, reducing the number of voids and tightening the coil in the process, effectively reducing the amount of headroom required.”
“This innovation presents a huge savings for architects, designers and facility managers working in tight spaces or in retrofit projects,” says Davuluri. Many existing structures were designed and built before modern ADA standards and building codes took effect. In turn, they require unique rolling grille applications that can fit existing bulkheads while providing a sleek and modern look that also reduces headroom. “The new product meets 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, which states that parking structure openings must provide 98” of clearance for lifted vans. It’s a win-win solution.”
Improvements that Combat Sound and Wind
The innovation in this grille does not stop at the reduced headroom requirements. The Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille’s unique vertical links also enable the grill to operate much more quietly than traditional grilles. With typical grilles, the thin vertical links are stacked on top of one another, but during operation can sometimes slip, also known as “walking,” hitting the rods and making noise. The Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille’s thicker links are designed to stay in place, preventing noise and vibrations. This quiet operation is a big benefit for multi-use spaces that combine parking, retail and residential use.
In addition, the Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille is windloaded – it is constructed to withstand up to 20 psf static design pressure as standard, and up to 40 psf as an option. While it may seem counterintuitive to need a windloaded grille, they can act as a sail when under wind pressure and blow out of the guides just like doors.
Engineered for Smooth Operation and Longevity
The Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille not only allows the A&D community to maximize clear opening by reducing the coil size, but its compact operator also features a variable-frequency drive that ensures a smooth start and stop.
This reduces wear and tear on both the grille and the operator. To ensure maximum uptime, the Extreme 300 Series MicroCoil Grille has a springless design which requires no maintenance, other than routine checks, and no replacement parts for 300k cycles. It accepts virtually all activation systems and features a two-year operator warranty and a 2 year/300,000 cycle component warranty.
CornellCookson designers and engineers incorporated a host of standard component materials and finishes in the product design, along with unique features that help it stand out from other rolling grilles.
The curtain consists of self-stacking/nesting rods in mill finish aluminum. Aluminum or stainless-steel tube spacers are placed on every rod, and individual links are always made of 304 stainless steel regardless of finish.

Intelligent Communication: The Apex™ SmartController (NEMA 4X) features plug and play connections to operator and standard sensors to reduce installation time. Its LCD screen provides step-by-step instructions for door commissioning, electronic limit setting, and status/ error messaging. It is also set-up to easily accept all activation and safety devices. - Monitored Protection, Even at High Speeds: UL 325-2010 (NEMA 4X) compliant photo eye sensors allow for momentary contact operation – useful in parking garages and other high-use openings. Interruption of the photo eye beam before the door fully closes causes the door to immediately halt downward travel and reverse direction to return to the fully open position.
- Safetygard Light Curtain Technology: The 6-foot tall light curtain is installed within the guide and blends into the guide construction with trim. If the grille is cycling and an object passes through the curtain beams at any point along the guide, the door will immediately halt downward travel and reverse direction to return to the fully open position.
