A. Stevens Krug, AIA, LEED AP, a West Chester architect well-known for his work in sustainable design, received the President’s Award from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Architects earlier this month. The award was presented to Krug by Elizabeth Masters, AIA PA President, at the annual awards ceremony at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts on November 10th.

“Steve exemplifies what it means to be a citizen architect,” said Masters. “He advocates for issues that are important to him and to the residents of his community. He brings his ideals into his everyday practice in many ways, and has for many years.”
A former AIA PA president, Krug chairs the Climate Change Advisory Committee, a group of sixteen appointed representatives that advises the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Secretary Patrick McDonnell on climate change action plans, greenhouse gas emission inventories, climate change impact assessment reports, voluntary greenhouse gas emissions registries and other climate change related activities. The Committee promotes energy-efficiency statewide through high performance buildings, energy codes and financing, transportation, urban forestry and other initiatives that save money, create jobs, and reduce carbon emissions in Pennsylvania. During Mr. Krug’s tenure, the DEP has published the 2015 Climate Change Action Plan and the 2015 Pennsylvania Climate Impacts Assessment Update (PDF).
Krug earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University and graduate studies in Architectural Engineering from Penn State. He is a resident of West Chester, Pennsylvania.
“I was honored to receive the President’s Award,” said Krug, “and grateful that AIA PA recognizes and supports both the Committee’s efforts to affect climate change policy, and my own professional efforts to create beautiful, sustainable design for my clients. It sounds extraordinary, but if the Commonwealth committed to building LEED Silver structures, we would save money and eliminate 98 million tons of carbon in the next 15 years. That would mean a breath of fresh air for Pennsylvania’s children.”
The President’s Award is given in recognition of special contributions to or support of the profession, the business of architecture or the built environment in Pennsylvania. Previous winners include green designer and licensure chair Bruce R. Johnson, AIA LEED AP; the Zoning Code Commission of the City of Philadelphia; professor, author and activist Witold Rybczynski; and Maureen Guttman, AIA, president of the national Building Codes Assistance Project.
