Industry veteran brings 25-year background with a focus on transformational planning and design

Maria Ionescu has joined Stantec—a global architecture, engineering, and consulting firm—as senior medical planner and senior project manager in its healthcare buildings team in Los Angeles. With 25 years of experience across the globe, Ionescu has built a reputation for transformational healthcare planning and design, helping large stakeholder groups identify their needs and priorities. Ionescu’s hire comes on the heels of Stantec’s hiring of healthcare principal Scott Reed, demonstrating the firm’s continued commitment to strengthening its healthcare expertise across greater Los Angeles and Southern California.

Ionescu comes to Stantec from Singapore, where she has served as the lead healthcare project manager on multiple facilities. Prior to working in Asia, Ionescu acted as the planning coordinator for the award-winning Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal in Quebec, the largest French-teaching hospital in North America. The $2.5 billion hospital includes more than 770 beds and 3 million square feet, and Ionescu led bi-lingual user-group consultations and coordinated planning teams across multiple time zones. Additionally, Ionescu provided medical planning and design leadership for multiple healthcare facilities in and around Toronto, including the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.

“Maria’s expertise will help us continue to grow our healthcare practice in Southern California and beyond,” says Erik Hanson, Stantec principal and California healthcare lead. “She brings excellent problem-solving skills grounded in a comprehensive knowledge base and is a terrific addition to our growing healthcare team. We’re thrilled to have Maria join us in Los Angeles.”

As a previous Stantec employee in Toronto, Ionescu was a recipient of the firm’s 2010 Award of Excellence. She worked previously at CannonDesign (alongside Reed), where she served as medical planning coordinator. Ionescu is a graduate of the Ion Mincu Institute of Architecture in Romania and was the recipient of a TEMPUS scholarship at University of Nottingham’s School of Architecture.
