Sherwin-Williams announces the winners of its sixth annual STIR® Student Design Challenge, dedicated to celebrating excellence in residential and commercial design. The winning original designs were selected from hundreds of submissions from students at notable design schools throughout the nation. In addition to national recognition, contest winners are receiving cash prizes up to $2,500.

Tyson Baker, a student from Maryville University, won first place in residential design for incorporating five Sherwin-Williams paint colors in a modern loft space. Jenny Campbell, a student from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, won first place in the commercial design category for her contemporary meets collegial, gothic-inspired law firm design. As part of the first-place award, both Baker and Campbell are recipients of a cash prize of $2,500 and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Sherwin-Williams STIR Magazine, in the STIR eExtra email newsletter, on Sherwin-Williams Facebook page for design professionals and at sherwin-williams.com.

“The talent displayed by the young designers who participated this year is extraordinary. Nearly every entry was of such high caliber that it was truly a tough task to select the winners,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, and a judge of the Student Design Challenge. “In the end, winning designs from Baker and Campbell struck a unique chord with the judges. Their designs incorporated carefully curated color combinations to create spaces that were both sophisticated and eye-catching.”

Elizabeth Holmes, a Newsday All-Star designer and owner of Elizabeth Holmes Design, and Melanie Sofia Castillo, technical designer at Gensler and Associates, joined Wadden on the judging panel.

Coming in second place in the residential category was Anna Nicholson of Radford University. A team of students from the University of Bridgeport, including Allison Antosh, Daniela Varela and Sarah Laffitte, came in third place. Second place for the commercial category were team members Michelle Cruz and Kate Heiser of Iowa State University. Michaela Murphy of Anderson University came in third place. Second-place winners received $1,000 and third-place winners $500.

A new element in this year’s contest was a Facebook Fan Favorite for both the residential and commercial category. Anna Nicholson who came in second place in the residential category also earned the Facebook Fan Favorite award for her sophisticated coastal design with more than 350 “Likes.” Natalie McCullough and Allison Sims of Iowa State University won the commercial category fan favorite with more than 500 “Likes” for their commercial design entry of a historic Carnegie Library.
