Designers from Stantec Architecture will present the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Redevelopment, Cambridge, Ontario and University of Lethbridge Science Academic Building, Lethbridge, Alberta at the prestigious event in Amsterdam

EDMONTON, AB – The shortlist of projects for the 2018 World Architecture Festival (WAF) were recently announced and two Stantec Architecture projects—Cambridge Memorial Hospital Redevelopment and the University of Lethbridge Science and Academic Building (designed with KPMB Architects) have been selected for presentation from more than 1,100 entries representing 81 countries.

The Stantec team will present both projects at the world’s largest architectural festival in Amsterdam on November 28-30, 2018. For the 11th year, a jury of more than 100 international judges will honor the world’s most impressive building designs with the coveted WAF Awards in either the Future Project or Built category.

“This global recognition is incredibly exciting and inspiring. Our work is founded in ideas of connectivity and contextual response to community, history, geography, and landscape with a goal to create unique built environments that enhance purpose, contribute to public realm, and create a legacy for the community in which they reside. We are thrilled to have been recognized by the WAF jury for achieving excellence in our craft,” said Michael Moxam, vice president for Stantec Architecture.

Cambridge Memorial Hospital

Cambridge Memorial Hospital

Designed by Stantec Architecture, the Cambridge Memorial Hospital is competing in the Health – Future Project category. It is one of just six projects selected and the only Canadian project alongside work from the United Kingdom, United States, Republic of Congo, Australia, and Singapore. The hospital’s design draws inspiration from the rivers, landscape, and communities that characterize the City of Cambridge. Its site on the bank of the Grand River provides the opportunity to create an environment of wellness that reconnects patients, staff, and families to nature and reflects the community they live in. With a focus on healing and stress-reduction, views to the river and landscape are paramount for patient rooms and family space enabled through the geometry of the patient tower. A transparent bridge link connects the new and existing patient towers echoing the regional tradition of bridges.

Designed by KPMB|Stantec – Architects in Association, the University of Lethbridge’s Science and Academic Building is competing in the Education – Future Project category. The project is one of 12 in the category and is again the only Canadian project, which includes a trio of Australian buildings, two from both Russia and India, as well as others from Denmark, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Kenya. Located in Lethbridge, Alberta, the Science and Academic building connects the campus and the community to the university’s science programs. The new building is designed to enable transdisciplinary education and research encouraging collaboration between disciplines through the creation of an open, transparent, and welcoming environment for the study and observation of science in action.  The design emphasizes “science on display” by placing laboratory space alongside main circulation space.  The new building will also be an exemplar of environmental sustainability.
