ACI hires Resource Center Manager, prepares for opening in Southern California

The inaugural American Concrete Institute (ACI) Resource Center will open next month in Southern California.  The ACI Resource Center will coordinate with ACI chapters and sponsoring groups to offer direct, on-demand access to all certification and educational offerings from the Institute. To help assist the industry and meet the growing demand for further access to ACI knowledge, the Institute recently hired William “Rusty” Owings, III, AIA, as Resource Center Manager.

Construction starts show additional gains in June

Dodge Data & Analytics reported today that total construction starts increased 6% in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $641.4 billion. This marks the second consecutive monthly gain in construction starts following the COVID-19 induced declines in March and April. In June nonresidential building starts gained 6% and starts in the nonbuilding sector moved 27% higher. Residential starts, by contrast, fell 6% during the month.

Westport Library in Connecticut transformed into multi-use community hub

The interior spaces of Westport Library in Connecticut were designed by HMA2 to accommodate multiple and flexible uses for every age group and all demographics, seven days a week. The transformation of this existing library, originally built in 1985 and expanded in 1998, unlocks the potential energy of its space and people. To achieve this transformation the outdated library interior was first gutted. Walls, floors, and ceilings were then lifted, stretched and reconfigured within the existing shell to weave a parade of dynamic spaces for all kinds of learning and socializing.

American Society of Interior Designers forms two task forces examining design’s role in the pandemic

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID​)​ is leading the profession in the fight against COVID-19, using the rich experience and knowledge of its membership and other stakeholders to form two new task forces: the ASID Adaptive Living Task Force and the ASID IMPACT Review Task Force. Focused on studying design and construction issues related to the pandemic and how the future of design will change as a result, the task forces fall under the Society’s member-led Advocate by Design Council, which advises ASID’s Government & Public Affairs Department on matters of federal, state, local and regulatory public policies that protect and advance the practice and industry.
