A premium green space renovation project in the heart of Houston’s Upper Kirby District

HOUSTON, March 2, 2017 — Burton Construction has completed and unveiled the totally redesigned Levy Park – a six-acre public park in the heart of Houston’s Upper Kirby District.  With a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Mayor Sylvester Turner, the $15 million renovation of the park celebrated its grand reopening on February 25, 2017.

Located at 3801 Eastside St. in Houston, Levy Park’s redesign was initiated by the Upper Kirby Redevelopment Authority in partnership with the Upper Kirby District Foundation and has been a crucial part of Upper Kirby District’s development.  Originally built in 1941, the park previously housed baseball fields, a community garden and dog park.  Through the design of The Office of James Burnett (OJB) and Natalye + Appel Associates Architects, LLC, Burton Construction has completely transformed Levy Park into a world-class urban space, creating a vibrant community-gathering area and a recreational destination for the people of Houston.

The newly revitalized park will allow tenants of One Grove Street a truly unique mixed-use experience. The park will feature year-round community programs including fitness classes, yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates. Residents will also enjoy areas for reading and games for children and adults, native landscaping and a botanical park experience.

Burton Construction added a performance pavilion and a state-of-the-art playground with rock climbing wall, seven-foot slide, tree house, water features and padded pathways. The mixed-use space features two event lawns, as well as a revamped 7,500- square foot rain garden that harvests and reuses storm water. The 6,600-square foot dog park is separated into large and small dog areas with water features and play hills. In addition, the beautiful new community garden will provide fresh produce for future on-site restaurants.

“The major renovation of Levy Park was a fully collaborative effort.  The physical result is amazing in its design and function, but also in the quality of its construction,” said Park Director for Levy Park Conservancy, Doug Overman.  “Burton Construction deserves a great deal of credit for the final result.  Their attention to detail, the work ethic of their team, and their excitement for the project were substantial contributors to the beautiful park we have today.”

“Our philosophy is to build long-standing relationships with our clients based on trust, integrity and partnership. We are happy to have had the opportunity to work with the Upper Kirby Redevelopment Authority and Levy Park Conservancy on such an important project to the vitality of Upper Kirby District,” said Cullen Burton, Executive Vice President of Burton Construction.
