Michael Baker announces completion of seagrass restoration demonstration project

Michael Baker International October 23, announced the completion of a seagrass restoration demonstration project as part of a larger safety improvement program at Merritt Island Airport in Brevard County, Florida. The firm, in partnership with Sea and Shoreline, LLC; the Brevard Zoo; and Titusville Cocoa Airport Authority, harvested seagrass from the end of the airport’s Runway 29, grew it in a nursery and replanted it at a one-acre seagrass island, known as the Rodney Thompson Seagrass Island, that was created as mitigation for unavoidable environmental impacts associated with the Merritt Island Airport Runway 11-29 Safety Area Improvements project.

Designed by Epstein Global and commissioned by the Westfield Group, a two-story interior curtainwall serves as a partition separating secured and non-secured areas of the airport terminal. Starphire glass panels fabricated by Goldray Industries, line up against one another and create a continuous image that shows the gradual changes in color and texture that can be seen when heading inland from Lake Michigan to Chicago and on to Illinois’ rural cornfields.

Boston Logan International Airport’s new, 10-story West Garage Extension features an attractive, kinetic exterior to distinctively screen the facility. Designed by Arrowstreet Inc. and manufactured by EXTECH, the dynamic façade system consists of more than 48,000 aluminum flapper panels that move in response to wind currents. Each flapper panel was finished by Linetec in Class I clear anodize.
