Borko Replaces Retiring Executive Director Gail Goldberg and Will Focus on the Homeless and Housing Affordability Crisis, Among Other Issues

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 1, 2018)ULI Los Angeles, a District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), has named Marty Borko its new Executive Director. Borko will leave his post as Principal at Gensler in Los Angeles to command the day-to-day workings and long-range planning of one of ULI’s largest and most active regional chapters. The Los Angeles District Council recently presided over the 2017 ULI Fall Meeting which set attendance and fundraising records.

Along with ULI Los Angeles Chair Clare DeBriere, Borko will pilot the organization as it confronts the most critical land-use challenges in the city, including the homeless and housing affordability crisis, as well as city planning, infrastructure, transportation, open-space and historic districts.

“My 27 years at Gensler have been focused on city building and improving the urban experience. That has help define me as a person and as a professional, so the opportunity to join the leadership team at ULI feels like a perfect fit,” said Borko. “I will be leveraging all my passions for the City of Los Angeles and working with the incredible group of people that make up the LA District Council.”

In his tenure at the global design firm’s Los Angeles office, Marty has grown the firm’s Planning and Urban Design, Entertainment, and Mixed Use practices and has been principal-in-charge on numerous international and Los Angeles projects.

“As a firm, Gensler is proud to provide longstanding support to the work of ULI, actively serving on national Product Councils and local committees along with hosting ULI events in our Los Angeles office,” said Andy Cohen, Co-CEO at Gensler. “Marty’s leadership and passion for urban planning and design has been instrumental in Gensler’s impact on the City of Los Angeles. This is a natural progression in Marty’s esteemed career and we’re excited to see him help shape the future of Los Angeles in his new role and continue our close relationship with ULI.”

Marty assumes the position held since 2011 by Gail Goldberg, who is retiring. Before leading ULI Los Angeles, Goldberg was Director of Los Angeles City Planning Department and Planning Director of the City of San Diego.

“We are delighted to welcome Marty as our new Executive Director,” said DeBriere, who assumed the two-year role of ULI Los Angeles Chair last year. “He comes to us after we conducted a national search among many worthy individuals. Marty was a natural choice, especially since he has been such a valuable and creative force in our organization for many years.”

In addition to being a Sustaining Member of ULI’s Entertainment Development Council, Borko is: Associate Member, American Institute of Architects (AIA); Member, American Planning Association (APA); Member, International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC); Member, International Association of Amusement Parks (IAAPA); Dean’s Council, University of Oregon College of Design; Board Member, Los Angeles Downtown Breakfast Club; Member, Southern California Development Forum; and Member, Central City Association.
