SageGlass®, manufacturer of the world’s smartest electrochromic glass, recently installed 2,800 square feet of SageGlass at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s (MSP) Terminal 1-Lindbergh as part of its north security checkpoint project.

Because the checkpoint faces east, employees in this area would experience an uncomfortable glare at certain times of the day. SageGlass was chosen for its ability to control sunlight to optimize daylight, outdoor views and comfort while preventing glare and heat gain. Travelers will enjoy a more comfortable atmosphere, which includes views of the outdoors and natural daylight.

“SageGlass plays an important role in solar control, both for energy conservation and for the quality of the indoor environment,” said Greg Maxam, Director of Sustainable Design at Alliiance. “Passengers benefit from daylight and views, but direct solar penetration can be controlled. This means better working conditions for security personnel, which in turn leads to a better travel experience. SageGlass is an innovative technology that is helping us transform the 50-year-old terminal building to better serve the next generation of travelers.”

More than 400,000 landings and takeoffs occur at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport each year. In 2015, the airport served more than 36 million travelers, making it 16th in North America in terms of the number of passengers served annually. With that volume, it was critical to find an elegant design solution that would make the airport more enjoyable and comfortable for travelers and employees alike.

“We all know that traveling can often be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be,” said Alan McLenaghan, CEO of SageGlass. “Studies continue to indicate sunlight helps people feel more relaxed and productive. With SageGlass, the facility can harness the benefits of sunlight and redefine the airport experience, making it more comfortable for both travelers and TSA personnel.”

SageGlass completed phase one of the project in partnership with architect Alliiance, general contractor Sheehy Construction Company and glazing subcontractor W.L. Hall Company.
