Santa Ana, CA, January 29, 2019 – SVA Architects’ design for the prominent new Performing Arts Center at Irvine Unified School District’s Woodbridge High School will soon take shape. Funded by Measure E with C.W. Driver as the Construction Manager, this Multi-Prime project commenced construction on December 28, 2018. An expert in designing performing arts centers, SVA has assembled a portfolio of numerous such venues, including Costa Mesa High School’s Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, Oxnard College’s Performing Arts Center in Oxnard, and the District Performing Arts Center at El Dorado High School in Placentia. SVA Architects is one of the firms setting a recent trend: emphasizing performing arts venues as community centerpieces.
Robert Simons, AIA, President of SVA Architects, spoke to this trend, saying of the recent project, “The design of the Woodbridge High School Performing Arts Center is reflective of its value as a civic building where community, culture, education, and life-enrichment takes place.”
Highlighting the school’s front entrance, the new Performing Arts Center at Woodbridge High School will serve as a campus beacon. The result of a highly collaborative process, the final design for the theater reflects input gathered from numerous workshops and meetings with Irvine Unified School District and the Woodbridge community. The new theater will feature a 650-seat auditorium, a stage, an orchestra pit, a 1,600-square-foot black box theater, and theater support spaces including dressing rooms, sound and light control booths, a scene shop, ticket booth, concessions, and a staff workroom. Construction is anticipated to finish by March 2020.
Simons further elaborates, “The emerging focus on performing arts venues represents a return to highlighting the arts as part of a balanced education. The theater makes a statement to the community about the school’s quality and breadth of the education.”
