Landscape architect Pamela Burton reimagines Cavalleri’s grounds
Cavalleri, a 68-unit luxury condominium in Malibu, is working to combat the continual drought in California by reintroducing native plants into its landscape. San Francisco-based real estate manager Pacific Eagle Holdings has partnered with internationally recognized landscape architect Pamela Burton to reimagine the surrounding 10 acres by paying homage to the site’s history, ecology and geography. By removing non-native plants and replacing them with local varieties, the site is able to use less water and resources to help them survive.

Young architects worldwide create solutions for urbanization in the “City Above the City” competition
The “City Above the City” challenged architects and students of architecture from around the world to push the boundaries of modern wood building design in the urban environment. Entrants were asked to select a centrally-located building in one of the world’s most populated cities and develop an innovative wood design solution that adds density through additional floor area. Known buildings, especially buildings under threat of demolition were encouraged as sites for revitalization, new development and innovation.
WoodWorks launches updated carbon calculator
WoodWorks launched an updated version of its free carbon calculator, providing more options for buildings made from cross-laminated timber (CLT) and other mass timber products. Using wood products that store carbon instead of building materials that require fossil fuel energy to manufacture can help reduce greenhouse gases.
University of Iowa Voxman Music Building designed for resiliency, sustainability and acoustic performance
The University of Iowa (UI) School of Music in Iowa City celebrates its 110th anniversary and a new home – Voxman Music Building. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting event was held on Oct. 21, 2016. The 190,000-square-foot facility replaces its former location, which was damaged by the 2008 flood. Designed for resiliency, sustainability and the highest acoustic performance, the $152 million project is targeting LEED® for New Construction Gold certification.

The University of Iowa Visual Arts Building opened October 7; a signature facility for the campus and a collaboration of Steven Holl Architects (Architect) and BNIM Architects (Associate Architect / Architect of Record) http://www.bnim.com/project/visual-arts-building. The 126,000 square-foot facility is the new home for the School of Art & Art History functions that were previously housed in the 1936 Art Building. The facility will provide studio space for ceramics, sculpture, metals, photography, printmaking, 3D design, intermedia, animation and graphic design, as well as graduate student studios, faculty and staff studios and offices, and gallery space.

Ace Hotel New Orleans restores historic Art Deco exterior and updates performance
Opened in March 2016, Ace Hotel New Orleans has transformed the 1928 Art Deco, nine-story Barnett’s Furniture building into a 234-room boutique hotel with dining, retail, event and meeting spaces plus a rooftop pool.
