Design unveiled for new federal courthouse in Huntsville

The U.S. General Services Administration unveiled design renderings for the new federal courthouse in Huntsville, Alabama, in partnership with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Steve White of Fentress Architects in Washington, D.C., is the project’s lead designer, and Lee Sims of Studio Scarab Architecture Interiors Planning in Montgomery, Alabama, serves as the courthouse designer. Payne Design Group Architects of Montgomery is providing bridging architectural services.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority selects Hensel Phelps-Stantec design-build team for new rail facility

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has selected the design-build team of Hensel Phelps and Stantec to design and deliver the WMATA Rail Heavy Repair and Overhaul (HRO) Facility, located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The approximately US$225 million project will support WMATA’s goals for greater efficiency and a new process for railcar maintenance, repairs, and overall operations.

The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands is pleased to announce that its 17-acre employee campus, including administration, archives, and operations buildings, has been awarded LEED® Platinum certification, the U.S. Green Business Council’s highest rating for sustainable design. The Sunnylands employee campus, completed in 2017, is the second new-construction project at the site of the former Annenberg estate in Rancho Mirage, Calif., to achieve a high standard of LEED certification.

KWK Architects repurposes 7.8-acre industrial site, warehouse into new office space for Washington University School of Medicine

When the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) purchased nearly eight acres of industrial space in 2018 for offsite offices and additional parking, it selected higher education design experts KWK Architects to lead the transformation. KWK designed a new façade and roof for the single-story warehouse to bring it up to current energy codes and update its appearance. A new, thicker insulated roof was concealed with horizontal metal panels to unify the new material palette with the existing brick on the complex’s north end. Daylighting features were designed to include a new storefront and north and east-facing sloped skylights to bring daylight into the interior spaces.
