Klyde Warren Park Wins AIA Collaborative Achievement Award

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced Klyde Warren Park, a freeway deck park in Dallas designed by OJB Landscape Architecture (OJB), as the recipient of the 2018 Collaborative Achievement Award. This award “recognizes and encourages distinguished achievements of allied professionals, clients, organizations, architect teams, knowledge communities, and others who have had a beneficial influence on or advanced the architectural profession.” The park will be honored at the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture in New York.

Dodge Momentum Index Falls to Start Year

The Dodge Momentum Index dropped 5.1% in January to 143.7 (2000=100) from the revised December reading of 151.5. The commercial component of the Momentum Index was 7.8% lower in the month, while the institutional component was down 0.9%. The fourth quarter of 2017 was particularly strong for the Momentum Index, and January’s retreat returns it to a more sustainable level.

The Vilcek Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Vilcek Prizes in the Arts and Humanities, this year recognizing the field of architecture. Awarded annually, the prizes call attention to the breadth of immigrant contributions to the American arts and sciences. “The social, political, and cultural landscape of America has been shaped by generations of immigrant contributions,” says Marica Vilcek, cofounder and vice chairman of the Vilcek Foundation. “With the Vilcek Prizes in Architecture, we are pleased to recognize the many ways in which they have shaped its physical landscape as well—through bold, original designs, and through research that challenges the status quo, both in the building arts and in society.”

Calling All Architects: 10th Annual Marvin Architects Challenge Officially Opens for Submissions

The Marvin Family of Brands invites architects in the U.S., Canada, Japan and Israel to submit their work to the annual Marvin Architects Challenge, which honors outstanding residential and commercial design projects that demonstrate creativity and ingenuity. This year for the first time, the competition has been expanded to include projects that use Integrity Windows and Doors products in combination with Marvin products or alone. The company is also expanding the number of categories eligible for prizes. The 2018 competition will recognize one outstanding design each in the following categories: Best Historic (new in 2018), Best Contemporary, Best Transitional, Best Traditional New Construction, Best Remodel/Addition and Best Commercial.

Smart Surface Technologies Research Unveiled

The U.S. Green Building Council and Mayor Muriel Bowser will be showcasing partnered research on smart surface technologies focusing on low-income urban areas in American cities: El Paso, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. The report, Delivering Urban Resilience, is a major breakthrough in understanding how cities can become more resilient, healthier and wealthier while slowing climate change. Authored by Capital-E, the report is the result of more than two years of collaborative research and analysis in partnership with organizations including the U.S. Green Building Council, the National League of Cities, the American Institute of Architects, the National Housing Trust, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the cities of EL Paso, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.
