Transforming Bernard Becker Medical Library into an education service and technology hub was one of the initial steps in a five-year plan by Washington University School of Medicine to better integrate its St. Louis campus. The program, called Building Campus Connections, focuses on incorporating educational services, expanding clinical space, and improving research and service facilities while building a cohesive, collaborative environment. KWK Architects took the lead role in designing renovations to Becker Library’s basement, ground floor lobby entrance, and second through seventh levels.

The Library and Archives Canada (LAC)’s new preservation facility in Gatineau, Quebec brought a challenge that felt both patriotic and historically important — preserving the documentary heritage of Canada. The ultra-modern facility will be the first net zero carbon building dedicated to the preservation of archives in the Americas, and it will also be the first Government of Canada building to meet the requirements of the Greening Government Strategy. Stantec is providing professional services to PCL Construction—as part of a public-private-partnership team named Plenary Properties Gatineau, and in collaboration with B+H Architects—on this state-of-the-art project.

Wichita’s Advanced Learning Library (ALL) in Kansas is the city’s newest and largest public library, replacing the old downtown branch. According to Rockfon’s Optimized Acoustics™ design approach, the first step to optimal acoustics in any space is to assess the amount of sound absorption needed from the ceiling based on the likelihood of noise and the sensitivity of the occupants’ activities to noise. “In a modern public library, there can be high noise levels at the same time that many people need to concentrate,” continued Madaras. “In the case of the ALL, the ceilings had to provide the best level of sound absorption as possible, an NRC of 0.90 or higher.”

Howard County’s Elkridge Library and DIY Education Center, a 35,000-square-foot endeavor, exemplifies an evolving and more expansive approach to library design. The parking and access ways, although functional in nature, required an innovative approach to blending the old with the new as well. The former property, which was built in the early 1990s, utilized a traditional storm drain and stormwater management system ill-equipped to handle to the region’s shifting weather patterns. Before resurfacing, the pavement areas’ excessive runoff and flooding issues had to be addressed.

In the Municipal category, PPG was honored for its contributions to the Calgary Central Library in Alberta, Canada, which features PPG DURANAR™ coatings on window frames and other extruded components. Designed to evoke snowflakes or cracked ice on a lake, the coatings include two PPG Duranar colors – Bright White and Broken Ice, a custom color topped by a pearlescent clearcoat. King County Library System honored with two Library Journal awards

As part of a $1.2 billion capital improvement program for its Main Campus in North Philadelphia, Temple University commissioned Stantec, as part of a joint venture with Snøhetta, to design its new library. The building’s base is covered in granite and appears different in color depending on the time of day, creating an evocative mood. Glass is strategically positioned at the three entrances to allow in the natural light and foster a sense of transparency.
