Western Specialty Contractors restores open-air St. Andrew by the Sea Catholic Church in North Padre Island, Texas

The Diocese of Corpus Christi contacted the concrete restoration experts at Western Specialty Contractors – San Antonio, TX Branch to restore the church to its original beauty and integrity, and to protect and extend its service life. The church had numerous chips, cracks and spalls on the concrete pews, under the roof structure and around repair patches. Every structural beam and column within the pavilion also needed repair, as well as a wooden cross and bell tower at the top of the church.

The Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, underwent an impressive and extensive preservation project that included the replacement of its 24 soaring windows surrounding the chapel’s nave. The original 58-foot tall windows, covering a combined surface of 16,700 square feet, were removed and replaced with fixed and operable Hope’s® solid hot-rolled steel windows.

Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, N.C.

The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral’s dome, apse and tabernacle all required a high degree of precision and detail, twisting and molding two layers of CertainTeed Gypsum wallboard to match the structural frame, which was first constructed on the ground and then lifted high into the ceilings’ curved surfaces to be fit and secured. The architecture also featured barrel-vaulted ceilings and splayed window returns, distinguishing this project from other cathedrals in the region.

Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Ark., was designed in 1921 by prominent architectural firm Thompson and Harding. Built in stages from 1921 to 1926, the 44,000-square-foot, Gothic Revival-style church features a red brick and terra cotta façade. Recently, the historic restoration experts at Western Specialty Contractors – Little Rock, Ark. branch were challenged with repairing the church’s bell tower which was showing signs of instability and wear-and-tear.

The new chapel is a delicately-placed, quiet counterpoint to the adjacent church, contrasting in scale but similar in form and material. The tall, angled shape of the chapel ties the building to its neighbor and creates a soaring space for worshippers within—a cathedral for one. The sculpted form is carefully carved on two sides and at the roof, allowing light to leak in from above the ceiling, along the floor, and adjacent to the sacred tabernacle.

The newly opened Shekinah Glory Temple includes a new lobby and a 2,000-seat sanctuary designed to accommodate the facility’s steady growth. Global design firm Stantec designed the 30,000-square-foot facility, which brings ROLCC’s total worship attendance to 3,500 at any given time.
