Latest North American Fenestration Standard Published

North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights (NAFS) has received final approval and is now available. This standard is the result of a multi-year effort by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA). The updated 2017 standard replaces the 2011 edition of the joint standard.

Innovative ways to tackle the urban housing crisis proposed by winning student teams in Urban SOS hOUR City competition

AECOM and Van Alen Institute, with 100 Resilient Cities — Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation, Thursday announced joint winners of the Urban SOS: hOUR City competition, which challenged student teams to work across disciplines to bridge the divide between thriving urban centers and struggling communities. “Rapidly changing household dynamics and exponential population growth are challenging our cities to accelerate supply and diversify housing options. This year’s winning teams have proposed innovative solutions that have the power to spark new conversations around how we think about neighborhoods,” said AECOM Senior Vice President and Global Director of Cities Stephen Engblom.

Stephen Ayers, FAIA, honored with the 2018 AIA Thomas Jefferson Award

Stephen Ayers, FAIA, Architect of the Capitol, has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture. The Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture recognizes architects in the public and private sectors, public officials, or other individuals who design distinguished public facilities and/or who advocate for design excellence. Ayers will be honored at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York City.

Steven Holl Architects wins international competition for new residential quarters in the Tushino District of Moscow

Steven Holl Architects, in collaboration with Art-group “Kamen”, has won the international design competition for the residential quarters of the Tushino district in Moscow, besting Fuksas Architecture, Zaha Hadid Architects, Mad Global, and Tsimalo, Lyashenko & Partners. The development will provide a new mixed-use center filled with housing, social spaces, a kindergarten and an elementary school on a former paratrooper airfield.

NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) last month announced an ambitious collaboration between the institution and several architecture, engineering, design and real estate development consultants in San Diego to revitalize the downtown of National City, located in San Diego County, California. NewSchool students and faculty will collaborate with the City of National City, the American Institute of Architects, Glumac Engineers, KPFF Consulting Engineers, Mackenzie Inc., Sillman Wright Architects, the San Diego State University (SDSU) Civil Engineering Department, University of California San Diego (UCSD) Structural Engineering Department, and Malik Infill Development.

Dow and the U.S. Green Building Council Work Together to Support Sustainable Cities and Promote Energy Efficiency

The latest data indicate that buildings are currently responsible for about one-third of global energy consumption, and about 30 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions and 20 percent of total CO2 emissions. In an effort to reduce these emissions, Dow and USGBC will collectively advise two cities or communities to help in achieving LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certification.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) was honored to receive the 2017 Crystal Vision Partnership Award on Wednesday, as presented by World Vision at the humanitarian organization’s 18th Annual Crystal Vision Award Breakfast during the 2018 International Builders Show in Orlando. World Vision’s Partnership Award is given each year to a company within the industry that has partnered with the organization’s Storehouse Program for a minimum of three to five years.
