August Construction Starts Fall 9 Percent

The value of new construction starts in August decreased 9% from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $741.9 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. By major sector, weaker activity was reported in August for nonresidential building, down 19%; and residential building, down 7%.  On the plus side, nonbuilding construction in August advanced 6%, reflecting a steady performance by public works as well as improvement for electric utilities following depressed activity earlier this year.

AAMA releases updated side-hinged door systems specification for determining forced entry resistance

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) recently released an updated document to describe a standard test method and performance criteria for side-hinged door systems in the locked position to resist entry under a specified load and conditions. AAMA 1304-18, the “Voluntary Specification for Determining Forced Entry Resistance of Side-Hinged Door Systems,” seeks to measure the ability of the operable slabs to deter opportunistic entry by unskilled intruders.

During this already active hurricane season, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) will host a webinar about lessons learned from 2017’s Hurricane Irma, which primarily impacted Florida. AAMA will present Chris Matthews, vice president and senior consultant of GCI Consultants, as he speaks about glazing system performance during Hurricane Irma. World Architecture Festival Reveals Winner of Inaugural Water Research Prize

World Architecture Festival (WAF) last month revealed the 2018 winner of its inaugural Water Research Prize, supported by WAF founder partner GROHE: an innovative, community led water management system, designed by a team of students from Pontificia Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) which captures, stores, and treats rainwater and inserts it into pre-existing water networks.

The World Bank, Build Academy, Airbnb and GFDRR to Launch Resilient Homes Design Challenge

The World Bank, Build Academy, Airbnb, and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) have launched a global crowd-solving challenge for designs of Resilient Homes. The goal of this challenge is to generate designs for low-cost and sustainable small houses (under $10,000) for people living in vulnerable areas affected by natural disasters. The deadline for design submissions is this November 30, 2018.
