Architects applaud reauthorization of Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act

In response to the legislation’s passage – which is now awaiting the President’s signature – 2018 AIA President Carl Elefante, FAIA, stated “With employment opportunities in architecture projected to grow over the next decade, for the first time this legislation clarifies that states can use federal career and technical education funding to modernize their architecture curriculums, which 49 out of 50 states have not updated in years. In so doing, it also legally recognizes architecture as part of a STEM education.”

Architects Foundation supports women in architecture with Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship

“The opportunity to recognize Orli and honor Sho-Ping through this scholarship elevates the entire profession,” said Architects Foundation Executive Director Marci Reed, CFRE, MPA. “Sho-Ping’s legacy is thriving and Orli’s passion for architecture is proof.” Hakanoglu is the third recipient of the Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship, which honors the late architect Sho-Ping Chin, FAIA, a long-time principal at Payette and a health-care practice leader who was instrumental in defining and elevating the national discourse for women in design.

Precast concrete infrastructure construction product demand to grow

Through 2022, demand for precast concrete infrastructure construction products is expected to increase 4.4% annually to $2.4 billion. Among others, growth will be fueled by the need to repair the nation’s aging network of bridges, highways, roads and railroad tracks; and increased adoption of precast concrete over less expensive site-poured concrete as more government officials recognize that the long-term cost savings provided by its durability outweigh short term considerations.

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), the North American green roof and wall industry association, is pleased to announce that Washington DC has retaken the top spot from Toronto, for the greatest square footage of green roof installations in 2017. According to its Annual Green Roof Industry Survey, Newark, New York City, Seattle, Portland and Toronto followed Washington DC in 2017

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) recently released a new document to describe proper guidelines and glazing procedures for structural glazing. AAMA SSGDG-1-17, the “Structural Silicone Glazing (SSG) Design Guidelines”, reviews a glazing that offers a unique appearance and simplicity of construction that often cannot be achieved any other way.

Uneven Conditions for Landscape Architecture Firms Found in Latest ASLA Business Survey

Landscape architecture firms are facing a subdued business outlook, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Business Quarterly survey for the second quarter of 2018. Based on the responses of 116 primary firm contacts, the survey indicates that billable hours remain a positive indicator of economic health. However, inquiries for new work and plans to hire declined.
